Maag EQ4...
This plug IMHO is a must have in any mix engineer's toolkit. PA is discounting it to $99 and Audiodeluxe is discounting it even further. Highly recommended!!

Glad I got it for $74.99 while I could. Just received the license from them this morning. I think either AD or JRR had it for the same price.

Hi I've always used a free plug in that does much the same - well I think it does as I do not have the Maag. It's Luftikus by LKJB - it's recently been updated and I use this all the time Nigel https://code.google.com/p/lkjb-plugins/

There are not a lot of "brand name" plug-ins that I think are noticeably better than the open source and/or free plug-ins that emulate them. MAAG EQ-4 is one of them. I tried Luftikus, and another one that I can't remember and Luftikus was the better of the two, but when I finally broke down and bought EQ-4 I relegated Luftikus to the bit bin. Even on (or maybe because of?) my compromised monitoring environment the difference is obvious. I recently tried the UA version, and I think it is ever so slightly different, but on my system I can't pick one over the other, so I'll stick with what I own already - makes for more room in the wallet for libraries<G>!) Disclaimer - I have used the hardware version, and so I probably favor the emulations because they are probably closer to the hardware. I've also tried building one myself, and I did OK with the Air Band (it's not that tricky really) but the lower two bands eluded me. If I had not become accustomed to the hardware I'm not sure I'd have made this purchase. Luftikus does an admirable job, but if you really want the MAAG sound I think you owe it to yourself to try the Plugin Alliance or UA versions. If you aren't after the exact sound, but rather like what an air band type filter does than you'll be perfectly happy with Luftikus.
AND, if you are the curious type, the Luftikus source code is available. I really enjoyed looking through it, and now that I'm thinking about it I need to go back and study it further. A very cool bit indeed!

I would never argue that point... well, I might argue at $75, I think I pair $99, and at that point it was worth it to me. But I'm not you, or anyone else for that matter (well, except for the multiple personalities<G>), so everyone has to make their own choice... not unlike just about EVERYTHING else one buys for music production<G>!

"Essential" implies that music literally cannot be made without it. yorolpal has never used hyperbole in the past, so I can only conclude that it's the lack of Maag EQ4 that's to blame for me not finishing any projects lately.

The temptation to have fun with your post is great... but i will resist. There probably is nothing, other than my guitars, that I consider "essential" per your definition (which is a good one, accurate even.) And there are very few tools, hardware or software, that I'd claim make my job easier. In terms of filters I'd say that I'd have to work a lot harder if I did not have Zynaptiq UnFilter and MAAG EQ4... in fact there are a number of tricks I could not even do without these two tools. They span the chasm that separates artistic and technical, and they let me shape the spectrum EXACTLY as I wish. There is no analog (pun intended) to UnFilter, not in hardware, and not yet in software. It isn't necessary for every production, but when I need it I need it. And while there are both hardware and software analogs to EQ-4 I choose to use EQ-4 because it works as I expect it to work. Essential? No... I could still make recordings without them. Important? You bet. In fact I'd be perfectly happy if no one else ever purchased either, as they would then become my secret weapon<G>!

In this case though, it's just a wee bit of hyperbole if any at all. That ol Maag is one great crayon to color with. Honest.

D#*M you ol' pal!!! I'm going to have to block you if you keep up this totally unacceptable behavior. First it was FabFilter. You raved and I finally tried them and ended up buying all of their products (thanks for the Friends referral btw) - including the latest Multiband Comp. Now it's Maag EQ4. I tried it - and then tried to duplicate the effect using my other EQ's. I came close but it is just SO easy with the Maag plugin. So I bought it. I don't see you recommend a lot of stuff. When I see you say something is a "must have" I have trouble ignoring it. Any other "must haves" that I should be telling Santa (and my wife) about? I have an incredible wife. A few years ago I told her about the short comings of my monitors and her and Santa surprised me with a pair of Barefoot MM27's. She did mention at the time that I shouldn't expect any more presents for the next 20 years or so but who knows? Thanks for the pointer to the Maag. I hate you.

You can still get Maag EQ4 for $99 at Sweetwater. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EQ4Plug/ I picked it up last night based on your recommendations - and WOW was it worth it! :) I went WAY OVERBOARD this black Friday, but I have to say I did get a lot of tools that are making my mixes much much better - and inspiring me to record more (how cool is that?). I am really liking the Maag and the Waves RS56 (on the master buss especially) - I'm finding having limited EQ options (as opposed to the wide open pallet of most EQs) makes it EASIER for me to dial in a good sound; they picked those frequencies for good reason, and it turns out that I'm a fan of the EQs that add some color. Also, I found the Eddie Kramer Drums from the signature package made my kick the hard thumping beast I have been wanting! so many fun toys - I feel like dredging up a lot of old jam sessions and mixing them. :) I do think I'm going to sell my Waves HLS and PIE though- I can't seem to find a place for them where I don't already have something I like a bit better. Might get the REDD - would love to get Waves SSL. OMG does this ever stop!?!?!?!
