Scott,

I have the latest VMWare and Sonar X2, but Win7. Did you say it it requires Win8? Hopefully not.

Thanks, John

This is REALLY impressive,I'm thinking about a Haswell macmini, when they get released, with the usual markup[of course] just for living in oz. :/

From my cynical point of view, but I'm genuinely curious about this, is a Mac really the way to go? I'm basing this on some of the new innovations and models of Mac Pro's being released.

I don't know Brian, but I'm going to try one when the MacBookPro comes out with the new Haswell processor.  The Apple hardware is rock solid and well designed.  I only hear good things.  And yeah the new Mac Pro?  Looks incredible.  And now that you can run Windows programs on a Mac you can have the best of both worlds on the same system.  And Logic Pro at $200?

I'd take the running Windows apps on the Mac with a grain of salt, though. Unless the OS natively runs the Microsoft code as part of the actual OS, I sense it's still going t be emulated (meaning, Sonar would be, too). But, If they can make it work, I'm down with that. I just wish Apple would allow me to put the menu bar on all screens, instead of only the primary monitor.

Apples new OS "Maverik" lets you put the menu bar on all screens.

Any news on this? I've got a friend who was using IK T-Racks in a wrapper called crossover. It worked great. I know Sonar is a much more complex program, but I was excited to see success there.

I'm just curious as to why people (not just here but in all aspects of computing) are working to basically turn a MAC into a PC.
I like MAC's and as the OP stated I don't want to turn this into a MAC/PC thing. They both have their good and not so good points.
It just seems strange to spend that kind of money for a MAC just to make it a PC.
Why not use that money to build or purchase a a quality PC in the first place?

I'm guessing that it's more of a 'I don't like Windows' OS thing. Not an 'Apple product is built better' thing.

And with this app it's possible to run Native AND TDM plugs?
Forgive me if there are silly questions but I'm thinking it's a MAC so you should be able to use your TDM plugs if you own them.
But since you're basically turning it into a Windows PC Will TDM users need to purchase all new plugs?

I'm so confused lol.

The thing is that Apple has some great software (I'm using Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 on a Mac Pro at work).  If you use a PC, you can't use their software.  But if you use a Mac, you can use PC software AND Apple software.  I would like to try Logic.  I will still use Sonar.  For licensing reasons it is good to have one computer to share some plug-ins like Superior Drummer, unless I shell out cash for multiple licenses.  So, I'm hoping to do this with a MacBook Pro.

Oh... I thought I stumbled onto evidence that X3 will be Mac as well as PC.

Now that would be real CAKEWALK DEVELOPMENT news.

No there is no X3 on a Mac. From the recently posted Gison-FAQ

Will Cakewalk develop a Mac version of SONAR?
Many musicians already run SONAR on the Mac using Boot Camp and various other solutions, so there are no plans for a Mac version at this time. However, Mac and iOS support for other products will play an important part in Cakewalk’s future.

I think the 'PC and Mac' part of the statement above refers to DimPro and Rapture which, IIRC do run on Macs...and there may be other products as well.

But no, as scook points out, X3 on a Mac.

I'm running on a Mac Pro using boot amp under Windows 7 Pro... I've had no problems at all related to the running of Sonar or any other windows program... Running for over a year now... I only have Lion installed on the OSX side as I've had no reason or need to chance changing anything...

Tho I work with it when I must, I have no personal need or desire for OSX so the Mac is set to boot into Windows by default. It simply runs as a high power dual Xeon Quad Core machine with 16GB of RAM... I couldn't be more pleased with the hardware.. (Well, the machine has support for 3 monitors if I could only afford to buy one or two more ;-))...

Why bother to spend the time/energy to make and support another version...

If you want need to stay in OSX but still have access to Sonar, I'm told the Parrallels software does so very well...

I'd much rather the Bakers stay focused on developing for a single platform... There are enough problems with that... I'm sure you notice that many of the soft wares supporting both platforms work well on one and not so well on the other....

Not yet, but I hope to have it installed on mine by this time next week... ;-)

I've got 8.5.3/X1d/X2a running just fine on it via Bootcamp to win7 Pro

I don't expect any problems installing X3 here at all...

For me, it's just an issue of workflow. I've tried all combinations: macbook pro with bootcamp, a windows desktop and a macbook pro; hackintosh with win7 and osx boot loader; OSX running parallels… None of it works for me. Bootcamp and other varieties of dual booting are inconvenient. Parallels is not a useful solution when using an audio app - too much latency and system quirkiness.

I like to work in OSX. It's a more enjoyable environment for me. I also like Logic, but Sonar is what I used for years. I would still love to use it, but I'd rather not have to switch computers, reboot, or sacrifice performance. It is definitely not an issue of trying to turn it into a windows machine. That's exactly what I'd like to avoid. I just would like to be able to use Sonar. May never happen, but it never hurts to hope.

Re:Mac OSX - Sonar X2. Working on making it a native .app 2013/11/29 20:23:04 (permalink)
Update - I bought a MacBook Pro retina and I love it.  I installed vmware Fusion6 with both win7 and win8. I didn't install Bootcamp yet. I've installed Sonar X3 and all my plugins into Fusion6 win7.  I copied over all my Sonar projects.  Here is the progress so far:

Plugins:  The only plugin that doesn't work is East West Play (tried both 3 and 4) - they both crash Sonar.  All my other plugins work fine.  Trilian, Superior, PodFarm2.5, Ozone4, Dimension and all the Sonar plugins seem to work perfectly.

Latency:  I'm experiencing poor latency when using a midi keyboard to trigger a soft synth.  I installed ASIO4ALL to help, but no improvement.  Probably about 60ms latency despite reported buffer size.

Audio Devices:  The internal MacBook Pro audio works fine (the speakers in the MBP are better than any laptop speakers I've ever heard)  PODX3 doesn't work at all - just a bunch of noise.  Unfortunately I really need Line6 audio devices (PODX3 and UX2) to work.

Summary:  3 big issues to overcome:  1-Play doesn't work, 2-PODX3 doesn't work, 3-Latency.

I will try Boot camp - hopefully this will give me better results.

ps - I've been trying out Logic.  Pretty cool software.  Although some weird stuff to get used to coming from Sonar.  I really want to be able to run Sonar on this mac.

Would be the coolest to get Sonar working as a Wineskin app.  I hope Scott is successful.

Brad, would you be so kind as to highlight your work flow for running Sonar in Parallels and pulling old projects into Logic?  You can't just copy/paste per se can you?  I've got Sonar on Parallels myself (but obviously no pro audio interface support), and would like to do the same.  Thanks!

Re:Mac OSX - Sonar X2. Working on making it a native .app 2013/12/27 14:46:38 (permalink)
Hey All,
I'm really hoping this concept, and thread stays alive,Iv'e only used computers since my join date, but after buying my mother anew dell inspiron, that was "only available" with W8....I absolutely hate W8[even with "classic shell"],I'm now looking to buy a W7 disc for it,as the metro interfAce "without" a touch screen for an 80 year old woman whom, although is still very sharp, has been next to impossible to teach.... a total disaster,of what was mean't to be a decent gift!

Anyway I mostly work on my XPS L502x laptop, but it's already getting very tired and lately even with a nice sounding VS-100 interface, the laptop just doesn't have the juice[i7 2630qm] to run the ASIO buffer at any less than maximum,so the "bad latency" with guitartrek is having is not enticing for my "mac mini" Haswell idea, and obviously I'm wanting to run Sonar X1,X2 and 3[own them all],I do have a desktop thats great[sig.] but it only fits in one end of the house, and it's stinking hot ATM[summer here-that part of the house has no insulation],and is more of an average single car garage turned into a spare room, also I like to work in my bed room, the thing is Iv'e always really wanted a mac,and with "Keni's" good fortune,it's certainly seems enticing.

As per usual the start price for the i5 mac mini in Oz is $749,as opposed to $599,like the US,anyway I do hope to read of more successes on this thread, while what I really should be doing is remodelling my tiny bedroom,to bring the still fairly powerfull overclocked 2600K in here, and spend the supposed mac money,on far far better monitoring.[I surely need it!]

It really just seems sensible to use one machine you can use BOTH OS's on,and apparently my 26k desktop has the correct ingredients for a Sandy Bridge Era"Tony Mac" Hackintosh-motherboard/videocard and all,but OSX discs in OZ,are like chickens with fangs!
They DON'T seem to EXIST!

Keep up the good work Scott
Sincerely
Bob

And then you look at the current status of the PC project, at the development costs in building a complex application from scratch,  which will need to be radically redesigned to cope with a new OS...

Anyways I understand the desire, keep on dreaming....

Ok - More progress -

First of all I am LOVING this MacBookPro.  16GB memory, 8 Cores, 1TB SSD drive.  This thing is a screamer!

I've got Sonar X3 installed and working extremely well in Bootcamp.  My only issue was EastWest Play - Play just won't work in Bootcamp.  I tested Play on another MacBookPro and it crashed too, so it isn't my computer.  As much as I like EastWest libraries, I'm not impressed with Play or their customer service.  I've bought Vienna Symphonic Libraries - great libraries, great player, and top notch customer service.

The thing I'm struggling with is Fusion6 and Sonar.  At the moment it is not working.  I've got 4 cores and 4GB allocated which is plenty, but it is having issues.  I've got some of my big libraries over on the Mac drive (D:) which works fine in Bootcamp, but with Fusion I have to remap this drive from Z: to D: which seems to cause problems. The loading of projects is maybe 3 times as long.  Also, I can't get a smooth playback even with really high buffer sizes.  And, it assigns a different computer ID, so Toontrack thinks it is a different computer and I'm maxed out at two computers for Toontrack.  So I have to use Bootcamp for Sonar for the time being.

I really, really like the Mac environment.  And I've been loving Logic.  While it is great that I can get Sonar to work on the MacBook for my old projects, I will probably be cutting over to Logic for new projects.  Things would be different if Scott came through with his wineskin version of Sonar, or they would develop Sonar for OSX.
