Making History

I wasn't going to post this one, as it was written for a purpose (wedding anniversary) and has already served that purpose, so not really much point in making chnges now, but then I thought that it's been a while since I posted an original and also that it would still be useful to learn what I did wrong and what people thought worked, so fire away......all comments appreciated as always.

I will apologise up front for the vocal FX, so no getting on my case for that ! The song was for Mrs Paulo and she likes that sort of thing............yeah, I know, but she's pretty so she gets away with it, right ?

What an anniversary present.  I like everything about this song including the vocal f/x.  The mix was very robust on my  speakers, and I could understand the lyrics.  I like this style of music, and you do it very well.  Very well done.

Good one Paulo, bet she loved this. ;-) I like the production, very creative stuff, and you crafted a great hook at the end...like the Pet Shop Boys with balls. ;-)

Outstanding production... I agree, everything works here including the vocal effect... but be careful with "automatic" pitch correction...
I heard a note around 1:28 and a few others that need adjusting... easy fix...
    Very cool tune Paulo...

Love this piece. This had to be a challenge to produce/mix.  Really diggin that percussion beat. A very well written catchy song.  KUDOS!

wow. a lot going on here, you flit from an indie song to dance to some kinda symphonic prog...amazing work. it's a manly effort and works really well, you can hear a lot of work in this one. great use of synths to give a big sound

Cool tune Paulo! Good mix of pop/dance...good mix too! I'm not crazy about the auto-tune sound of course, but I'll let it slide because I luv ya man...and it did work on this quite well. :) I'd still love to hear this without that. Scream at 3:44 was a nice touch...nice job brother. :)

    Hi Paulo,

it would still be useful to learn what I did wrong
    ummm...I would say nothing.
Great job on every aspect of this from the song, the production and the vocal performance.

I'm sure Mrs. Paulo loved it.

As for the vocal effect...it's become so pervasive in current music if you and others hadn't mentioned it I probably wouldn't have even noticed it

What's the vocal effect you used?  If I could try that, maybe even I would try singing.  :)

Anyway, fantastic, and what a cool gift.  Good for you!  :)

    Hi, Paul,

Very cool, clever and really creative song with a huge, monster mix!  I really love the synth work on this.  Lots of wild curves on this cool roller coaster ride, I'll bet Mrs. Paulo loved it.

Thanks to all for taking the time to listen and comment - very much appreciated.

Lynn  - I'm not even sure what style of music it is - it was a hard one to categorise for soundclick purposes.  I'm glad you think it works.

Bapu - I wish recycling was an option, but I fear that I won't get away with that - will no doubt have to come up with something else next time. Mebbe I can use it again in the future on a greatest hits anniversary compilation.

James - PSB with balls ! I like that. Funny enough they did a kind of Oasis sound-alike track a few years ago and I remember thinking they should do more like that as it was an interesting combination of styles.

Frank - Thanks for the compliments. I'll check out the vox as you mention - I did indeed take the lazy route due to time constraints.

Kev - yeah, you're right. It fought with me for the longest time and with 24hrs to go I thought I'd never get it presentable in time, then finally something clicked and it came together a lot better.

Mgh - yep, bit of a mix of styles there for sure. The dance elements/vox were for Mrs P, but no idea where the rest came from really, other than I wanted it to twist and turn a bit.

Foxwolfen - thanks for listening - glad you liked !

Danny - Yeah, I'm no autotune fan either, but like I said, it wasn't for me. It's funny that you came on here to listen to this one as I was reading your views about that subject just after I posted this and I thought - It'll be just typical if he picks today to check out my tune lol ! Fear not, it's a one off for me.

Geeare - thanks man , you're very kind. Thankfully she did like it . I know what you mean about the autotune thing. The almost certain use of it on whoever's latest release is actually the main thing I have against it.

Janet - it's just auto-corrected with v-vocal. Turn vibrato to zero / sense to 100  / Formant control shift up a couple of notches and press Correct. Job done. Ironically, it didn't work too well the first time I tried because my vocal track was too in tune, so I did it again a little looser and it worked better, I guess because there was more correction required then. I've spent many hours over the years having to re-do vocal tracks , but this was the first time I ever had to re-do one to make it worse, lol !

Warren - thank you so much. I'm so glad that people are thinking it works - I thought it did, but I did wonder whether others would feel the same.

Bob - Thanks for the mix comments - I was aiming for something big, with a dramatic ending, so I'm glad it's coming across well and yeah, it was well recieved by Mrs P ! Made it all worthwhile.

Other than I thought the vox was a tad too upfront.  Love the song and production.  The vox xfx is cool but sounds a little uneven in spots, like it's almost a tad too fast, not sure.

    Cool tune, well done.

Thanks Daryl - I think I know the bits you mean and it was meant to be that way, so that every "bend" didn't sound the same. To be honest, I didn't really spend too much time on that bit as it's not a technique/effect that I have any plans to use again - just a one off for Mrs P who likes that sort of thing.

I actually like the vocal fx a lot, maybe in a couple places they need to be a tad more subtle.  Really I just love this song, not sure I want to go into reviewing it so much and just enjoy it.  The one problem I have with it is the sound quality, I think it could be better.  It just seems like a veil is over the music that needs to be lifted.  I really love the song though, did I say that?

Scotty - thank you - glad you liked.

Wookie - Yeah, I'm not mad keen on the vocal fx myself really, it was done for a reason on this one. Glad you enjoyed the rest.

Tony - thank you for listening. When I was doing this I was thinking how much better it would sound with your vox on it (but then that's probably true for just about any song, lol ) Glad you liked it anyway.

ATS - thanks for the ears and comments. I'm sure you're right about the FX, it's not something that I spent much time on. I also know what you mean about the "veil" effect. I had a tough time getting this one to this level to be honest, it just fought me all the way for some reason (prolly 'cos I don't really know what I'm doing half the time) and then I just ran out of time, so had to go with it as is. Anyway, I'm glad you could still enjoy it for what it is. :)

Thanks for checking it out bro - yeah a bit of a different feel this time out, for reasons already covered. I'll no doubt be back to my melancholy self before long, so don't be worrying that I've defected to the autoune generation.  Glad you found something to like anyway. Sorry for delay in responding - been away from the www for a bit.

Those drums on the verses are tremendous. Kinda disappear on the prechorus.

Thanks for listening and commenting James. I know what you mean about the drums - originally they were at the same kind of level, but it sounded too much then and didn't give the change of emphasis I was after, so I pulled them back some. Maybe should have been somewhere in the middle of how they were and how they are now. In the end I just ran out of tme with this one as I with one day to to go I scrapped the original lyric, vocals and melody and started from scratch.
