I wondered the same thing Karyn, how he did it......my first thought was that the TV show itself is probably lucrative. A few of his wives  have jobs. I don't know how they would have much time to work with that many kids and all of the work that would make.
 
He owns a construction business. On one of the vids he says that their grocery bill is 4000 american dollars a month. That is even more in euros.
 
 

In an unrelated story, a Utah man has just won an Olympic Gold medal in Apologizing. His wives accepted the medal on his behalf and said that they would present it to him as soon as he woke up. They said that he typically collapses into a coma on Valentine's Day and doesn't wake up for at least a month. They were sure he should have time to appreciate the medal once he got caught up on a backlog of chores.

They can only handle one of us  and even that's a lot.

Now that I Am single I like it. I was married once for 38 years. Now ......No attachments. Just a tractor license

I knew poligamy was legal in Utah.I didn't think anyone actually did it...and 5 wives.

 
Part of the law against bigamy in Utah was struck down by a federal court, but the gist of the prohibition remains in force:

"The court finds the cohabitation prong of the Statute unconstitutional on numerous grounds and strikes it. Holm, 2006 UT 31, 131-53, 137 P.3d 726, 758-66, thus allowing the Statute to remain in force as prohibiting bigamy in the literal sense—the fraudulent or otherwise impermissible possession of two purportedly valid marriage licenses for the purpose of entering into more than one purportedly legal marriage."
 
Basically, you are allowed to legally marry only one wife, but you can live together with as many women as you can convince to do so. Presumably you can do that without marrying anyone as well.
 

So that means they are not really married. They just think and say they are.

And again, applying successfully for welfare can be done without anyone marrying anyone.

They likely all share the same house. Still, I can't imagine the pandemonium in that house.
 
One family in this area has 25 kids.... yep, as far as I know, it's one mom and one dad.... who seemingly have never heard of modern birth control.  I believe, if I remember the story correctly, they are all their natural kids. None are adopted. Due to their ages, many of the kids are now out on their own so they're not all living in the house.
 
This family made the local newspaper a number of years ago when they were given a new house by the Habitat folks. My wife is a school teacher and has had many of the kids from that family in her classes through the years.

This is a much deeper issue than I thought it was. The motives are a lot different than I originally thought. For all I know the show could be a  lie and the women could all have other men elsewhere. The pretense has financial rewards.
 
 I'm wrong in saying that they are all really married according to the law in Utah, when only one of them is.
 
They can co-habit but only one marriage is recognized. Maybe another way to look at is , it isn't legal to marry 5 women and treat them like wives but you can still  do that. Sounds like a contradiction. Much like some of the issues going on in state legislatures concerning gay marriage( for the record i'm not gay )...but I do see a similarity in how this is handled.
 
 
The state doesn't seem to have a problem financially supporting the behavior and thereby helping to perpetuate something they have voted not to condone. Make sense?? Not to me.
 
This show has cost me an injury. I was laying on the sofa and I asked my wife to toss me the remote. After flying though the air for 15 ft. the remote hit me right on the head. It hit and then bounced off. I feel bad for that remote. I don't think she aimed it at me. 
 
Before I turned up the volume I thought I heard the woman say , " You've seen a lot of vaginas". My wife tells me she said something about her pajamas....whew.
