Marking frame accurate video hit points in Sonar X2?

Hello....

Is it possible to move or nudge the now time cursor forward and/or backward by one frame?
I need to create frame accurate markers for a video project I am working on....

I am aware of nudging clips by frames via the numeric keys 1,3,4,6,7 and 9... but I need to be able to move the now time by frame increments too.

Thanks,

Vic

Yes it is. I have one set of key bindings set to nudge by 1 frame and another set of bindings to nudge by 5 frames.

(go to Nudge Customization in Preferences to make the changes, and then bind them to where you want in Key Bindings)

Hi, thanks for your reply.....but please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the nudge settings apply only to clips or notes that we want to nudge by certain note or frame increments.

What I want to do is nudge the actual now time/playback cursor by frames so that I can mark specific hit points in the video I am working on....{In PT, this is done by hitting the comma and/or period keys to nudge the playback cursor forward or back by your nudge settings.)

Is this action possible?  If not, then how do you guys mark specific frame locations in your video timeline?

This post will show you how to set up nudging of the Now time using CAL with keybindings:

http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=1365944

But it's by ticks, and ticks/frame varies with tempo and frame rate so you would need to edit the tick value in the CAL files to work with a specific combination. Also, there will be many combinations that don't yield a perfectly whole number of ticks per frame, which means it's going to get out of sync as you nudge farther away from a perfectly aligned starting point. And if your project had varying tempos, you're totally out of luck.

So it's awkward, but that's all I've got for you.

Just nudge until your hitpoint lines up, forget up about frames. Cubase 7 has exactly what you you are referring to. Hopefully X3c will have some killer new video functions, such as a video jog feature.

It's so much easier in PT. I guess that's why it's still the industry standard for this kind of work. Well maybe in X5......

Yes, and thats exactly what I do, nudge the cursor by a frame not nudge a clip....

As I said make sure you have set up the nudge key bindings to respond to frames and then when you are nudging make sure that you click on to the video window and nudge from within there.

You can video jog already.....

By default there is no key binding for it in X3c but you can create one yourself...Search the bindings for "scrub tool"

Hi markyzno,

I'm really stumped cause I still can't get it to work...I'm pretty sure I have my nudge settings to frames. I guess I need to ask you what you mean by "click on the video window and nudge from within there" ?

Are you also using the numeric keys of 1,3,4,6,7,9 to nudge the cursor or are you using your own keybindings?

Thanks for your patience....

Re: Marking frame accurate video hit points in Sonar X2? 2013/10/14 11:34:53 (permalink)
I am using my own key bindings.....

L/R keys for 1 frame nudge and { } for 5 frame nudge and "Y" to scrub.

Go to Preferences and make sure you are looking in the "video view" bindings section and then pick "advance 1 frame" for whatever key you like and "step backward 1 frame", then you also have a choice to keybind "advance several frames" (which is 5) and just repeat the bindings where ever you like.

Dont forget to use these bindings you need to in VIDEO VIEW and not in any other window.

p.s by default in the bindings section it looks for commands in the GLOBAL BINDINGS area, just switch that drop down box to VIDEO VIEW area.

Hope this resolves it! I just tested a re-bind on X3 here and it worked, so should work for you no problem....

btw, also make sure you have your video view to display Frames or SMPTE (right click on the video and change the "time display format")

Vicsant, can you mark/edit this one as solved...it helps the Film Sonar community when they are searching on google.

(btw, for what its worth it took me alot of head scratching to unlock all these features from Sonar, and also its worth noting that the Bakers are working on a better workflow for people in our industry :) )

X3c all the way!
