Mars Rising, total forum collaboration!

Hello to all,

I wasn't going to post this again, but with all the work by other forum members, I just had to give credit where credit is due. This song has been redone with virtually all "live" musicians as follows:

Lead Guitar: Charlie Wood (luvbucker)
Rhodes: Jonas Aras (Jsaras)
Drums and
Percussion: Steve Demetrican (SteveD)
Bass Guitar: Ed McGlaughlin (ed_mcg)
Rhythm Guitar
and sequencing: Randy Forshey (rgfors)

As always, any and all comments are most welcome and appreciated!

Mars Rising

Randy

Yeah, guys! Sounds nice. Nice playing. Good sounds. I found myself kind of waiting for something to happen; but, if it was just meant to be a "mood" piece, you achieved it.

All around good work, AFAIC. Nice job!

    Hi Randy,
I'll preface this by saying that I'm a total Rhodes
nut .. but .. i would have involved the instrument more
    in your song ....

    kind of like this:

Mars Rising .. more Rhodes ;-)

    I understand what Jonas was doing .. but .. there's a rhymthic
counterpoint and a selling of the changes that the rhodes can
do like no other instrument ;-)

    hi randy,
i updated the rhodes a bit if you listened to it .. same URL (above)..
also .. this thing needs a bridge bad (IMHO) .. .. one idea would
be G/F .. to Em/D to a root from the main part (Dmin maybe)
... the step would let you climb on the guitar and sing out a bit.
    jeff
ps: the rhodes is way up in the mix so you can hear what i was
doing .. i'd move it back at least 3db or more....

    Randy,
I really like how this turned out. Has a cinematic feel to it; our protagonist rides off into the desert sunset.

    Jeff,
Some of that sound good, but I'm not sure how well that modified C chord at 0:20 works, just a little to jazzy / open sounding for our cowboy hero I think. Nice ideas otherwise.

Em/D root - that's a good one. Say how about that tune you started that ended on an Esus4/F - that's just nutty (I like it).

that's too bad .. 'cause that was my favorite change ... i thought
it brought some color into what was a pretty stock descent.

    but .. if it's a cowboy tune .. rhodes is out altogether ( circa 1942 )

No doubt, it sounds great. Just takes it to a whole different place. What was the chord, I think I might have to rip it off?

I always preface what I say with IMHO, because I am not a musician or engineer etc. I also did not read other posts (no time today) so forgive if I repeat.

The thing I really liked here was the warm organic tubey sound of the Bass and Lead guitar.

Also was amazed at the quality of recordin the Drums.

I found the congas or whatever in the right speaker distracting.

Did not like the strings. That is a personal problem I have. I never like strings in any song anywhere

I like it alot. I dig the extra Rhodes version as well. The the original is
maybe a little more high contrast with the extra space and all. Very cool
for you guys to be able to collaborate like this via e-mail. The technology
    today is incredible.

Very nice! Good playing and nice song. The mix sounds a bit thick or crowded in the low-mids to me, though - like too many pieces competing for the same sonic space. Nit-picking aside, this was a pleasure to listen to.

    Hello Jeff,

I love the Rhodes myself (someday I will have to learn how to play one!)

If you would like, I would be more than happy to send this to you as a bundle and you can have your way with the Rhodes! Let me know if you would like to collaborate on this..

it's your call mr composer .. ;-) i like what Jonas did .. don't get
me wrong .. he filled in real nice. i was trying to add more
    punch on the changes.

why don't we hook up on the next one?

and rhodes .. it has a wonderful range of tones .... i like
when it buzzes and growls .. just before a tine breaks ... ;-)

Very nice tune with a good and clean mix.

The following reflects just my personal taste:
    1. Although I'm a guitar player, the lead guitar is a bit too loud for me.
    2. I'd like to hear a bit more 'air', say high frequencies.

You are all very good musicians, so keep up the good work.

I found the congas or whatever in the right speaker distracting.

shouldn't that be left speaker? i actually checked my cables after you said that, and with a set of headphones, and i'm pretty sure it's the left speaker... i've flipped my headphones a couple times without realizing it... =)

since this is a great mix overall, i'll have to nitpick:

i didn't find the conga distracting on my speakers, but i did on the headphones. maybe pan it back some. the lead guitar work was really good, but there are a couple notes that seem to get lost here and there and others that jump out a bit much. also, the acoustic guitar (that's what it sounds like, some kind of plucked string instrument) sounds kinda midi-ish.

i loved the overall feel of the mix, very warm. the strings didn't bother me, but i also felt they were a bit ordinary - not cheesy but generic. they do the job of thickening the mix though.

i liked the rhodes, but haven't listened to the other 'enhanced rhodes' track yet.

    Hey Randy!
Beautiful job here. I've been gone for awhile with the holidays and haven't had much time for the songs forum. Anyway, I haven't forgotten about our project but I haven't had much time for outside projects at the moment. I have been slowly getting session work here in Chicago that has taken up my "spare time". Call me, I want to go over the guitar parts with you.
