Maschine Jam

Anybody use one?  What do you think?

W/ SONAR?  I'll probably just dump stuff into SONAR, but it is always interesting to see how hardware works with SONAR when they don't list it as a supported DAW.

I have asked the same question back in October (http://forum.cakewalk.com/NI-Machine-Studio-Jam-vs-traditional-DAW-workflows-m3492681.aspx) and did not get a lot of responses, so there are probably not many Sonar + Machine combinations in use out there ...???

Anyway, still interested in its capabilities, so I will follow this thread.

I think Zo mentioned using it as a controller these days. Maybe he can comment ...?

I saw that one.  Not much info.  Hope Zo will comment, and, if not, I will once I get one.  And the rest of the Komplete goodies ought to round out my collection from them.

    Thanks.

    Another point I'd forgotten:

If you buy a Maschine (or any other hardware with a lot of software) be sure it is unopened.  I went to guitar center (which is literally across the street from me, albeit a block down) so I could fuss w/ it over the holiday.  THE BOX WAS OPEN, AS WERE ALL OTHERS.  And my Maschine hardware was already registered which meant no software download, which meant no Maschine.  They had to order a new one, since every box in Dallas/Ft. Worth (6+ M population) was already opened.  I think I see a pattern there.

So beware of open boxes of hardware w/ lots of software included (the maschine software costs more than the hardware).

I use Maschine with Sonar, but so far I just work 100% in Maschine until the project is mostly sketched out, then export all tracks and then import into Sonar.  After that I'm 100% in Sonar.

I found a video about using Maschine within Sonar - it's a bit old but probably still relevant:-

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DylihYvYuUI

Apparently the latest version of Maschine - 2.6.5, opens up things up a bit more for working with DAWs.  My understanding is that when you're loading new groups you have the option to retain your midi routing/audio routings (or not).

I don't think using Maschine within Sonar is seamless at the moment; NI have spent some time and effort getting it to play nicely with Logic, Cubase and Ableton, but that's it.  As I said up front, this is not the way I work at the moment.  Things like quantize for instance - it seems you either do this in Sonar with the Sonar quantize or in Maschine with the Maschine quantize, but then does that mean Maschine and Sonar are out of sync?  I don't know.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Godfrey.

I'll probably use it like you do for a while, and dump maschine stuff into SONAR.  I finally got my maschine software installed last night, so it is square one with me.

    Hi AT
I haven't tried this, but one of the users on the Maschine Forum has put together a routing tutorial.  It's for Cubase but will probably translate to Sonar.

Hope you are having fun with the Jam!

I wish I had the time to have fun.  I'm still getting my head around Maschine out.  Still, even not knowing what I'm doing can be instructive and I've had a little fun, but only on the demo projects.

Just don't forget to come back and share the experience ... still interested myself but now is not the best time for me to go and try how it fits more 'traditional' workflows ...
