I usually reach for the Kjaerhus Classic Limiter if I use one. Either that or I set up one of my many compressors as a limiter.

I use L2. Generally now it's Waves C4 multi-band compressor, any other optional stuff, then L2.

    Interesting...

A totally inconsistent response from all posters.

It seems there is no particular limiter at the lead of the pack.

I think probably that limiting technology is not of the sort that anyone has a particularly stunningly superior solution. I guess mostly the differences between them is the dithering, but to me that's such a second order issue that I'm not going to get stressed out about it. I'm using one of the most widely used limiters, so obviously it can't be paticularly sub-standards on this front.

One that's see commonly mentioned are:

    1. Waves L2 or L3 (L2 comes with I think even the least expensive Waves bundle, L3 with the larger ones)
    2. Voxengo Elephant
    3. Kjearhus MPL-1
    4. There's one as part of Ozone3
    5. Sonnox Oxford Limiter (higher endy one, as are all of the Sonnox plugs)

There are some free ones out there as well.

    Interesting...

A totally inconsistent response from all posters.

Here's the problem: when a limiter does its job well, nobody says "wow, that limiter is good!" because you can't hear it and that's the idea. When a limiter does not do its job well, it isn't always apparent that it's the limiter that's at fault.

To further complicate limiter evaluation, when it doesn't work well it's usually user-abuse that's the real problem, and if you're using a tool incorrectly out of ignorance, how are you going to tell if the tool is any good?

So it's no wonder there is no consensus.

Furthermore, I have tried every limiter mentioned so far except the Waves products and every one of them is capable of being abused to the point of causing distortion. Every one of them can do the job unless they are pushed too hard.

That said, though, the one that seems most impervious to my best attempts at abuse would be Ozone by far. You almost cannot make it sound bad.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

The PSP Vintage Warmer 2 is a permanent fixture in my mastering armoury.

It also lends itself to many uses in the effects bins of individual tracks and [especially] in electric guitar and drum busses.

if i need something quick to slap on a bus i'll use the kjaerhus classic. if i need something more trashy then PSP vintagewarmer. for clean stuff and my feeble attempts at mastering then it's ozone time.

For $200, there is not a better purchase to make out there. At first I wanted to hate ozone because I always believe "you get what you pay for", but now I find it hard to find fault in the program. It sounds better than almost anything out there. Well.. one fault... the presets are pointless. Then again, I always think using factory presets in mastering plugins is a bad idea.

I could never really get comfortable with Ozone, so I sold it. It may have just been my lack of understanding, which has expanded quite a bit since then. But, now that I have Waves Platinum, I have pretty much all the same tools, other than a multi-band exciter, so I use those tools. And of course it provides a raft of other tools used during the mix. But if you are just looking for something to handle that final step, a lot of people like Ozone and the price is good.

It's actually quite nice. Easy to use. Sounds good. I've used it a few times myself. I also have that Elephant limter which I like too. But most of my better plugs are from Scope (Sonic Core).

Here's a post I made awhile ago comparing different (free) limiters. Its only based on a basic drumbeat but still, if anyone thinks it's interesting.

Since there's a lot of different limiters/maximizers/clippers etc I thought I'd make a little comparison between some of them. Each plugin gets two beats and everytime you hear the beep it's time for the next one. The beat is a very simple drumbeat looped and I started out by adjusting Boost 11 to reduce peaks fairly aggressive by about -5 db and then adjusted the following plugins so they would have a comparible loudness. It is by no means perfect, and I didn't take to much time or put to much effort in the project (for instance yes it's just a drumbeat...), but it might be interesting anyway.

First a clean beat followed by in order of appearance:

    1. Boost 11
    2. Kjaerhus Classic Limiter
    3. Tls Pocket Limiter
    4. Antress Modern Limiter
    5. W1 Limiter
    6. Sonitus Compressor (inf. ratio, 0 attack, 199 release)
    7. Antress Modern Amplifier
    8. Buzzroom Maxi3
    9. GVST GClip
    10. TbT TubeLimit
    11. JB Barricade
    12. Antress Modern Painkiller (LA2A...)*
    13. Antress Modern Painkiller (LA3A...)*
    13. Antress Modern VLME (LA2A...)*

*Had lower total output than -.1 dbFS (about -2/-3 dbFS) so could easily be raised more without further coloring.

Since most people listen to music as mp3 nowadays I saved the file as an mp3 (audiophiles flame away) but if anyone wants it as 24/96 wav just let med know.

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.
