Mastering in Sonar

Does anybody else use Sonar for mastering stereo files? I have just started using it for this purpose, instead of wave editors like nero. Just wondering what methods other people use. I mix down the songs in 24 bit. Then import them into a new Sonar project for mastering, each song on a different track. I have ozone and an eq on the master bus, changing the settings for each song as I mix them down. I'm also mixing down in 24 bit and opening the new mastered songs in nero for burning. I don't know if nero dithers down to 16 bit automatically or if it makes the CD in 24 bit. Is that possible? My question is: Should I be putting ozone, and any other plugins on the master bus? Or would it be better to put any plugins on each individual track and send it directly to soundcard, not using a master bus at all? Does it make any difference?
1 more question: What should the rms be after mastering? I'm getting around -20db to 10db.
Thanks.

I did something very similar.... on a recent CD I put together.

Mastered in MC4 with Ozone in the master. All tracks got the same O4 treatment so they sound alike.

I used MC to raise or lower the levels of the different songs...all in seperate tracks, so the levels are consistant on the CD.

I used WAVEPAD to do my final trimming...silence at the beginnings and ends were trimmed. .5 sec of silence inserted at each song's start.

    It works for me.

    Hacker,

Did all the mixes sound alike before mastering?

Since balancing frequencies and levels for cohesiveness from song to song is very important for a CD compilation, I'd recommend putting a different instance of Ozone on each individual song track.

    To the OP,
Ozone's dither is supposed to be pretty good, you may want to just dither them down, then import 16bit wavs into you CD burning app.  There are no 24bit CDs.  DVDs are 24bit though.

yeah pretty much, since they were all recorded on the same setup in a relatively short period of time.

that did make the "mastering " a bit easier.... mostly levels needed to be adjusted. very little was done to the sonic tonal qualities of the songs.

I also tended to use the same customized preset in each song as it was individually finished and mastered.

The final O4 was to give the polish to the entire  collection....very light.

    • I use sonar in a part of my mastering process, for vsts.
    • Ill also use some outboard gear specially made for mastering (Manley compressor/limiter, A Manley Eq and a Neve for stereo imaging and a lynx converter).
    • Then I use CD architect for the arranging and spacing of tracks and to burn to red book specs.
