Mastering with X1 Producer's VC-64 Vintage Channel 1.5
I posted this at the end of a string talking about mastering my track on the Songs forum, but thought it might get a wider responce here: "Regarding mastering and compressors. Does anyome have an opinion on the VC-64 Vintage Channel 1.5 that is included in Producer? Considering the cost of 3rd party mastering plug-ins this might be a good reason to upgrade." Any opinions would be welcome

If you had Producer Expanded you could use the PC with the add on modules like the CL to help in mastering.

I do not use that plugin for mastering, but I am sure it could be used reasonably to do some of that. A good limiter is always needed though. Lance

One thing I have been trying to do is do away with all my mastering plugins replacing them with PC modules. Its not going to happen anytime soon. But I have been making inroads in this area. The Big knob saturation module is useful and the new Quad EQ works wonders but PC still lacks a good multi band comp as well as some analytical tools. Plus Ozone 5 is simply too powerful to ignore. In combination PC and ones favorite plugins equal better mastering over all.

you'd be better off using the LP64-EQ and LP64-multiband surely? they're a bit clicky if you're changing parameters during playback, but the quality is great (do any of the pc eq's use linear phase processing?)

I always thought the LP in the LP64 plugs stood for Linear Phase.

These kind of questions are hard to answer with any kind of consensus because it is very subjective. I would argue that mastering with VC is possible. It's a damn good plugin. The freebies that were made by the same designer( Kjaerhus ) are still in heavy use. Personally, i find myself using the pro channel modules more and more, but i have no doubt that in a pinch, I could use VC or even Sonitus suite. Both VC and Sonitus Suites were once among those costly third party plugins (VC is basically a reskinned Golden Channel) and were highly regarded. The idea that something that worked well is no longer any good is nonsense. Otherwise there would not be such a glut of SSL clone plugins. The bottomline is deciding which plugins to use is a personal decision. One that is often derived from trial and error and more importantly preference. When you upgrade, particularly if you go the Expanded route, you will have lots of options, VC included and options are usually a good thing.

ampfixer I always thought the LP in the LP64 plugs stood for Linear Phase. You're absolutely right - but pwal asked if any of the pc eq's use linear phase processing, to which the answer is no.

One of the chapters in my advanced workshop videos involves using the VC-64 for "transparent" mastering. The basic idea is to use the two compressors in series, set for very low ratios and very high thresholds. This sounds fantastic with jazz, acoustic, etc. projects where you want to give just a bit of a "lift," but don't want to hear any compression artifacts. The VC-64 shouldn't be underestimated. It also makes a great signal conditioner for amp sims.
