Matrix MIDI clips only works with soft synths

I can't get the matrix view to work with external MIDI synths. Soft synths I create the groove clip like normal drop it in and it works. External MIDI synths no joy. What am I doing wrong? I'm pulling my hair out.

    Any takers? I really want to get to know the Matrix view but it just doesn't seem to want to play ball. When I try to select a MIDI instrument as a row output it doesn't let me. The output stays '-'
