Matrix View + Yamaha Motif XF6 - Is This Normal??

Hello all.
I have recently been trying to figure out how to get my Motif and Sonar X1 
to play well together. I use midi and instrument definitions to run the show.
I noticed that I can easily get the step sequencer to trigger my hardware 
synth and I just KNEW that it would be the same when I began to learn
how to use the matrix view.

Bad assumption. 
It appears that it will not play back in the view but I can indeed create 
segments and use all of the matrix view functionality. It just will not
sound in the actual view, i have to drag the segment into the track 
window in order for it to play back.

Is this normal?
