i keep telling myself i will give matrix mode a fair shake but at first glance, this seems to be a more intuitive and usable implementation. i have been contemplating picking up FL and rewiring it into sonar as simply an over the top drum machine. This may push me more in that direction.

I'm going to download the beta and check it out. I wonder if it will work as rewire in sonar 64bit...

It really doesn't suck at all. Fl Studio is optimized as a 32 bit program and works quite well. I am of two minds on this. If Image Line does not believe in the merits of multi cores cpus and is not in any rush to go 64 bits I don't want them to push something out that they are only doing to appease the user base and not to do the very best job they can in supporting those things. It will come in time.

good point. One thing I can say for FL is that it seems to be very functional and stable. Don't fix what ain't broken.

I'm always happy to see the competition to Sonar get inventive and creative. I don't really see Cakewalk as "inventive/creative" in their product output; I see them more as Utilitiy type programmers (ie, get the basics working, add some utitlities like track folders, etc -- that kind of thing). So when the ccompetition starts putting out very cool and modern ideas (function based), it somewhat forces Cake to take notice and occasionally play catch-up. Studio One, Abelton Live, FL, and a few other hosts have been coming up with some real interesting tools/functions so I do hope there'll be some pressure on CW to kick their programming staff butts into higher gear now that X1 has basically been stabilized. There's a lot of neat stuff going on in the DAW market, and there's no reason CW can't compete more aggressively and creatively as well.

I'm very much aligned with this viewpoint, but I do feel for Cakewalk a little bit and can understand reservations about implementing too many features from other DAW programs as it's very much damned if you do, damned if you don't. There were users that got bent out of shape that any development time was spent on Matrix View, claims of the the new Ableton crowd being catered to at the expense of the old school MIDI and (later audio) functionality that Twelve Tone was founded upon. Personally I like all different ways to create music and once I decided to do some work in Matrix View found it to be a creative tool to add to my already tried and true methods. Do I use it each and every day? No, but I don't have any issues with further development being used to make it a better tool. Like Billy, I hope Cakewalk look at what others find attractive about other products and offer functionality where possible that keep them competitive in a very an obviously crowded market. As always, individual mileage may vary.

As always, individual mileage may vary. I also like different ways to create; and it's why I use more than one DAW these days as well. It's also challenging and keeps the mind crankin' -- "use it or loose it" comes to mind ;) As for the Matrix .. I was excited they were bringing it to Sonar, but I was disappointed with its implementation (there are those who disagree of course). But that's where I think CW needs to tweak itself a bit. There is a tendency (as evidenced over many years) to "half bake" things lol. But seriously, I understand things take a certain amount of money and _resources_ to deploy properly, so I suppose they do the best they can under the circumstances (and the type of market/audience they appeal to).
