bitflipper Forget sales numbers, I have my own criteria. The list of albums everybody liked except me is quite long, and includes Bat Out of Hell. However, back in the day my band covered almost the entire album. The material was fun to play, audiences ate it up, and "Two Out of Three" got me laid more than once. As did "Mandy" and "Bridge over Troubled Water". We also covered "Nutrocker" by Bee Bumble and the Stingers, which impressed other musicians but never once got me anywhere with a barmaid.

I'm fine with the first album, as is just about everyone. The second ... I don't know. Maybe a few more listens will wake me up or something. Fun reading, if you never have, is Meatloaf's book, as a sort of autobiography. It has a lot of fun things, but I'm not sure many folks appreciate his acting side of the work he does. He says ... he's an actor that sings ...

I have never listened to it. It was a bit dated when I started to listen to music other than my parent's collection. He had his big comeback a few years later, but it did not appeal to me. It is kind of odd to think that I went through life without hearing a single not off of an album that sold so many millions of copies. But then, I've never seen Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter either...

Not a good actor at all, although my old age would probably cheat and make an old man look good on stage? I'm a better director than actor. I can help the actors be better, and present themselves better and more efficiently. Btw, "campy" is not my style ... one of the bes reviews I ever got, was for having an actor play a dog, and "be a dog", in the show and it got an incredible review ... how did I prepare with the actor? Easy ... we went outside at UCSB campus and watched that dog and that dog and that dog ... and we want that done, and that,, and that and that. It was all there on the stage between all the lines! So I cheat! Hey ... those actors all got an "A" and I got known as the director that could get magic out of the actors ... and how I did it was the most fun and least academic style of it all. It's a shame that I can not do this with a band ...

That's amazing. So, you got an actor to pretend to be a dog, after getting him to look at dogs. Quite extraordinary.

The guy was a freshman and while not new to acting, he was good. The woof's were all over, when he wanted to be petted by the girl. The yap's and yelps were on his moments of excitement, like running through the window, miss the couch and roll on the floor. We won't mention the sniff's since it might excite Strummy way too much!

Too funny. I hadn't heard it in a while. I had forgotten. Plus I'm catching more now that I did when I was a teen when it was released... I like how they were all excited with doo-wop teen spirit but couldn't stand each other when disco rolled around. One has to admit it is creative. Not something I would listen to repeatedly but a good tune.

I wonder if I might like the songs any better if they were less in-your-face. Maybe a cover by someone a bit more low key might help. I wonder what "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" might sound like sung by Norah Jones.

Out of curiosity, I checked it out on iTunes tonight. Not my cup of tea. Some of it reminded me of late 70's Alice Cooper - without the humour, which makes all the difference. Then I read: "Its musical style is influenced by Steinman's appreciation of Richard Wagner, Phil Spector, Bruce Springsteenand The Who." None of which I particularly like. Actually I can't stand Wagner, so... That explains it. Looks like I will not be adding any Meat Loaf to my collection any time soon. In fact, I ended up scanning Uriah Heep records. I've been meaning to get to know better for quite some time... Now that's more like it!

It's a tough and acquired taste, but not one of my likes either. But when Werner Herzog uses it on a film ... geeee ... take the voices out, and it sounds OK.

Just curious how you ended up going from Meat Loaf to Uriah Heep. I used to have a copy of The Magician's Birthday on vinyl when I was a kid. Rediscovered it on Amazon Prime. The title track is about as pure Spinal Tap as you can get, but I'll take it over "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" any day. I'll take this song over ML any day... http://www.avclub.com/art...ian-space-rock--249794
