Well I am open to suggestions - medium priced. I think the other day I looked on line at an Audio-Technica that was less than 200 - cannot recall the model. Apparently medium diaphram are relatively newer - I really did not know they existed until recently. The description indicated they are good to use for instrument recording - ala - acoustic guitar, but really have no clue.

Use them on whatever you want. The more you use a mic the more you'll know what it sounds best on.

A popular and low cost mic got a lot of forum talk about 2 years ago.. the MCA SP-1....it is a medium Diaphragm condenser. There may not be a specialized call out as " medium Diaphram " but generally they are in the 5/8" to 7/8 " diameter size. There is nothing particularly special about the diameter really. Many small diameter mics sound amazing / many large sound amazing too. It's really about the build quality..the diaphram tensioning, and electronics. ... and of course if the housing looks like art deco small animals - or baseballs --well it's got to be good.

There aren't a lot of medium diaphram mics, tho there seem to be more coming out these days. The only medium priced ones I know of without thinking are the Oktavas - mk 103/104. They both run about $500, which may not be mid-priced to many. @

As I recall, the AT 4033 (and similar versions in their other lines) has a somewhat smaller diaphragm and is considered by some to be "medium diaphragm", though it's generally used just like a large diaphragm would be. As to what a medium is best used for, I would say any application where both (either) small and large diaphragms are often used - acoustic instruments, overheads, etc.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
