Meet Lilly
This is Lilly. She's about 7 months of age now. Her back story: She was purchased to breed by someone who didn't understand that puppies are destructive by nature and need supervision. They were not prepared for the work or the time needed to mold her into a fine dog. So they tried to sell her. No one wanted to buy her. Then they tried to give her away. No takers either. So they decided they would simply shoot her and solve the problem. My daughter's boy friend heard of the impending doom of the dog and told the folks he would take her. It was his full intention to keep Lilly. However, due to his work and school and the fact that his folks already have 3 other dogs, Lilly was more than he could handle. So we ended up dog sitting her for several weeks while he prepared a pen for Lilly in the back yard of his folk's house. My wife and I played with Lilly and of course, I have another dog, an outside dog, who is very well behaved and trained and socialized so Lilly and he play together well. Lilly is house broken and we have kept her inside. My wife and I discussed Lilly's dilemma and decided to float the possibility to Matt that we would be interested in adapting her if he decided that she was a bit too much for him to properly handle with his schedule. We discussed it with him and asked him to not make a hasty decision but to think on it and decide. If he wanted to keep Lilly, that was fine and we would be willing to dog sit her when needed, or if he wanted to let us have her, that too would be fine. He decided that with his busy schedule, we would be the better place for her. So last week, she officially became part of our family. We will very likely ask him to dog sit on the occasions we are out of town. She's starting to settle in to her new home. Those first few months of life were hectic being bounced around from one place to another but now she's starting to come out of her shell nicely. Now, we can start to work on some training and some fun. Oh yeah..... she is full blooded German Shepard.

Craig.... I'm thinking she will grow into those ears. they certainly pick up the slightest sounds..... which is helping her become a nice watch dog.

Congrats on the new addition to the family. She's lovely! I'd love a German Shepherd. They're amazing, loyal and dedicated dogs. Last summer we celebrated Independence Day at a friend's house with a bunch of other folks, and you could see that his German Shepherd was "on duty" all the time. Not in a menacing way, and he was extremely well behaved. But he had his master's back.

She's beautiful Herb! I had a German Shepard back in the 70's I loved dearly. Her Name was Gretchen. A great family dog!

It's amazing that no one would take a full blooded German Shepherd for free. It's even more amazing that anyone would even consider shooting a cute little pup like her. Kudos to your daughter's boy friend for saving her. Congratulations on the addition to your family!

Yeah, you just can't figure some people. They seem to think only of themselves and have no regard for anything or anyone else. There was a story in this morning's paper..... a man had over 6 dogs in one 10x10 backyard pen. It was filthy. 3 dogs had gotten out and were roaming the yard and up on the road. A passerby called a guy who runs a dog rescue operation in his yard. He showed up and tried to catch the dogs. He called his wife who also failed to catch them. they called the sheriff dept which handles animal control. The deputy told him he had no business trespassing on private property and if he caught and tried to remove the dogs the deputy would arrest him. Eventually the home owner returned to find the man, his wife, and 2 deputies in his yard. He called the dogs and put them back in the pen then ordered the dog rescue guy off the property. Plenty of problems on all sides in that story, but that's an example of how people are. This dog rescue guy has run afoul of other dog owners in the past by doing the same thing.....trespassing and taking dogs that are not his. He's been threatened with arrest in the past for taking dogs off private property without permission. Aside from his love for dogs, he has no official authority to do many of the things he does. He's not a veterinarian and he doesn't work for the local govt. He has a form (don't know if he still does this or not but he did at one time) that he makes people sign who adopt dogs that requires the dogs not be chained or kept in small pens and gives him the right to "stop in and check on the dog's living arrangements" from time to time on your private property. the dog owner was at fault for keeping so many dogs in the same small pen but they are his dogs and it's not against the law. Besides that, it's very common here in NC to see a bunch of hunting dogs in a pen together. The sheriff deputy was simply there to assist where possible and enforce the law and the dog owner's rights. Since the dogs were not off the property of the owner, the deputy could do nothing but observe and possibly try to get the dogs back in the pen if he was so inclined.
