Melda AutoVolume does a great tremolo effect
Unfortunately I was looking for something to automate volume.
:-(
Turning the speed to zero isn't enough.
Turning the sensitivity down merely makes the process ineffective.
Turning Look Ahead up to 100% doesn't make it any smarter.
The thing just reacts so quickly that you can hear the warbling of the volume.
The graphing seems generalized, the tutorial says that the auto volume both increases and decreases gain, but the graphing just showed less or more positive gain.
At it's worst it sounded like an ancient Automatic Gain Control... the ones you never left on because you can hear them breathing. At it's best it sounded like a nifty tremolo effect. When I had it sounding really good... it didn't actually smooth out the levels enough to warrant its use.
I guess it makes for a fun side chain ducker. I'm glad I demoed it first.
The look ahead feature had me thinking optimistically that it might be able to see that the next few seconds were quieter than the past few and it would gently bring the volume up over a passage and maintain a level for a while. Instead this thing excels at super fast reactions even in the slowest settings.
Maybe I'll try Hornet.
