Melodyne 4 .......why did I do it? [SOLVED]

Having decided a while back that the upgrade from Editor 2 to Editor 4 didn't really seem worth the bother for some reason (it became very cheap) I gave in.

I'd seen some threads where there were issues in the bandlab version, but still being a platinum user (2017.10) I thought I would be safe enough.

Reallllly wish I hadn't now. Seems very buggy.

Every instance opens as a straight line and I have to manually re do the algorithm for melodic (even though I have set this as the default option). The clip background is plain white and not how it used to be (with note indicator stripes) which is how it still looks on their website and as for dragging audio to midi - complete crashfest.

The clip background is the same in Studio One 3 so is this just how it is now?

Is it just me? Is the bandlab version the same?

there is another thread about this - I have the exact same problem. It seems (or many people think it is the reason) that the latest update caused this and we don't know when the next update is. Yes, I have to choose melodic everytime. My only work around now is that I open a larger segment at a time (if tuning vocals) so that it only has to draw the line once. But of course that isn't always practical -but it works.

Thanks for the suggestion and confirming that I'm not going mad - ever since v-vocal I've been in the habit of only selecting small clips because anyone who used it knew how it went when you didn't.  I hope this gets fixed soon.

Me too.  Always have to manually select melodic or polyphonic to get it to do more than show a straight line (which is probably the percussive algorithm loading by default).  Frustrating, but it only take a couple seconds to remedy and everything else (except the time cursor not visually jibing with what's showing in the CW track view window).  They know about it and should fix it - not sure why they haven't done so yet.

how this version ever made it out of beta is beyond me, but the only issue for me is that it doesn't remember the default algorithm

Happens to me as well. My workaround is to close melodyne, press ctrl-z and then make a slightly different selection before engaging Melodyne again.
That second time, it draws correctly.

Seeing this here as well but I suspect it may be down to the version of ARA. S-Plat and CbB are still using ARA 1 but Melodyne is now ARA 2, which is supposedly backwards compatible but not as backwardly as we would like.

If it is any consolation it has been reported to Celomony on a couple of occasions.

Funny, mine behaves exactly the same way, and the discrepancy with the time cursor made it unusable, so I reinstalled the previous version. I also sent Celemony several projects that had time issues. Their response was that my files worked flawlessly in their environment... I call BS... I also run the full Studio version, and that's a lot of scratch to spend for a buggy product that's been a problem since September... I'm not real thrilled with Celemony right about now...

I thought that I was going mad earlier when the time ruler kept getting out of sync. I thought it was my old pc having trouble keeping up with it as it looped.

Wow, this version is really buggy.

When you say that you installed the previous version, do you mean v4...something or prior to 4?  I only have the v4 installer they sent me when I bought the upgrade.

Unless you have more than one license you can't reinstall v2 if it was used to upgrade to 4. Celemony requires surrendering a license to upgrade.

Yeah, I was hoping that there was a previous version 4.xx installer somewhere that I could install instead of the latest one until it's fixed.

I have only known Melodyne to work this way and I have been using it for a year when it was bundled with Samplitude ProX3. I must always manually change To Melodic and then it works,

Update ( in case anyone is interested)

Celemony sent me a previous v.4 installer and it draws the audio correctly so at least that is now unbroken again, Still missing the horizontal note lines on the audio clip, but I'm happier than I was. Haven't had time to test if the time ruler is behaving itself or not in this version yet.

They said that they know there are problems and they are working on it.

same thing here, but my machine also locks up!  Extra fun.  I get the straight line, and can change to the correct algorithm, but I get a drop out, then no response at all.  Have to kill manually.  I may export the track I need melodyned and open it in Studio One.  PITA!

Is this the 4.2 update or the older version? The pre 4.2 version they sent me has at least got it drawing properly and it seems a little snappier too .

Re: Melodyne 4 .......why did I do it? 2019/01/01 23:47:07 (permalink)
I had Melodyne Editor 2, used it a lot within Sonar Platinum for audio-to-midi conversion, both with monophonic and sometimes with polyphonic audio. With the former I'd just drag the audio file to an empty midi track and Melodyne did the conversion behind the secenes, via the magic of ARA, leaving me with a reasonably good (depending on the source material) midi track.

Because this method uses the monophonic algo by default (with no way to change this default to my knoweldge), the only way to export polyphonic audio as midi was to apply Melodyne as a region effect to the audio clip, and, from within the Melodyne GUI, choose the Export as Midi (or maybe it's Save as Midi) command. Worked well enough, given the inherent challenges of poly conversion.

However ... I upgraded to Melodyne Studio 4, and while it still handles monophonic conversion fine within SPLAT, now, the tempo of midi files converted from polyphonic audio, using the method decribed, is way, way off, like half the speed it should be.  Total fail, unusable.

When I try from within Melodyne Studio 4 standalone, I get the same error.  (I'm still on version 4.1.1, as I've read that some folks who updated past that where having problems, and I'm afraid I don't trust Celemony's technical competence these days like I used to. I've used Melodyne since I bought the first version in 2002).

Anyone able to get this to work?

This is a serious problem for me. I used Melodyne a lot for poly conversion and now, having paid to upgrade, no longer can.

Gosh I hate that they won't let you roll back. Bad enough that they take your money and screw this up; however, to keep your money but not let you roll back makes me a bit bitter.

    Success!

Celemony sent me another version of the pre 4.2 installer and now all my issues seem to be resolved. I have asked them if I am permitted to share the link to this installer and will post it here if I am allowed to - assuming that this place is still open at that point. If it is closed I will make a post at the new forum and put it there.

They have asked me not to share the link, but I can confirm that what I now have installed is a pre 4.2 version so if you have an older installer pre 4.2 I guess it must be worth a try. I had to uninstall 4.2 first as it wouldn't allow an older version to overwrite a newer version, but so far so good.........

Good thing I kept my 4.1.1.1 installer. I'm actually surprised I didn't delete it.

I reinstalled the 4.1 version I happened to have. I tend to save previous downloads until I'm sure there are no issues with newer versions. It barks at me when I launch, but I just close the browser window and continue working. Version 4.2 was unusable for me. Had issues in Studio One 4 as well...

When you say that you installed the previous version, do you mean v4...something or prior to 4?  I only have the v4 installer they sent me when I bought the upgrade.

FYI, I got an email today from Celemony.  Melodyne 4.2.1 is available.
