Melodyne Editor Playground - Song Suggestions? (Includes MP3 Example)
I bought the Editor upgrade the other day, and haven't had a chance to record anything other than drums since then, but I DO have one 6-string bass track (sort of classical in nature) that I tested it on, and it didn't work very well... BUT, I don't really blame the editor for that, since most tuners can barely even detect the pitch of the lower strings... So with that being said, I really wanted to dig into the editor, and just see if I can get familiar with it, so I loaded the song "Uncle Tom's Cabin" from Warrant, because I remembered it had an interesting acoustic guitar intro that I always thought was cool. So I focused on that, started tweaking notes, and practically wrote a brand new song, just by stealing their guitar part and swapping pitches of individual notes. (I'm not actually going to use this for anything) but my point is... THAT DNA DETECTION STUFF IS RIDICULOUS! I'm curious if any of you have any songs that come to mind, that are primarily "one acoustic guitar" or something along those lines, that you think would be fun to just tweak & mess around with inside Melodyne Editor. I'm personally all for recording as many instruments as humanly possible with actual microphones, and only using keyboard samples and stuff for creative filler content or whatever... BUT... For a rap producer, or someone that "samples" other people's music (like Kanye or whatever) it seems like Melodyne Editor would be one of the most magical tools ever created for ripping off other people's music, and making it your own. But yeah... To be honest, I'm kind of shocked that the DNA editor works. I really didn't think it was possible (without sounding distorted & robotic). EDIT: Here is a link to the MP3 of my reworked intro to Uncle Tom's Cabin by Warrant... Completely done manually inside of Melodyne (from just importing the song, and hacking away at it's DNA)... http://www.shadowmafia.com/MP3/UncleTomCabinRework.mp3

When the Children Cry - White Lion The intro is fingerpicked acoustic guitar. Could be real interesting to move those notes around.

I just tried to post a link to my reworked version of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by Warrant, but apparently I can't post links on here... Do I have to hit a certain number of posts or something before I'm allowed to post links? I really thought it was a worthwhile demonstration for Melodyne Editor.

I tried to fix some bad notes on a bass vocal in a quartet I recorded a while back. I had the same experience. There were so many harmonic notes that it was virtually impossible to tune that vocal track. But the guy sings really low...and those notes just would not register correctly. Any other vocal track I've worked on has had very good results...as well as guitar tracks and fixing wrong notes.

Ha, that Let It Be sounds kind of bad... But it's still awesome software none-the-less... I gave up on my Uncle Tom's Cabin remake, once the vocals kicked in, because stuff just got weird & too hard to edit cleanly. (I'm assuming the same happened with that Let It Be song)...

@Etmos: I'd love to hear your "Uncle Tom's Cabin" effort. You might be able to get around the link issue by giving it to us in a format like this: uncle_toms_cabin dot mp3 at soundcloud dot com, or somesuch.

I pulled in a couple of classical string quartets -because they are limited instruments with distinct timbres - and dragged the audio down to a midi track running into garritan and kontakt and was amazed by how close the translation got without any fiddling.

I like this idea! I haven't thought about that yet. I've mostly been thinking along the lines of acoustic guitar & maybe piano. But yeah, I bet you could do some crazy stuff with a string quartet!

I must admit I upgraded to editor despite the fact that there's no way I can afford it right now. Polyphonic audio to MIDI this good is pretty much one of my dreams and I had to take advantage before the offer runs out. After the X3 upgrade and now this I am going to be doing some serious belt tightening for a while! Celemony I hate you.....and so does my landlord this month It is so amazing. Straight away I went and sampled some Spanish guitar music and dragged it into Sonar. Let Melodyne do its job and dragged it into a MIDI track which I output to Reaktor's Prism. I could not believe how accurately it recreated the notes and the feel, I didn't have to change a thing. Going through some synth presets was great fun - the music became something unrecognizable but wonderful. Next I tried it on some of the George Duke clips from "George Duke's Soul Treasures" which comes with Komplete Ultimate. I always loved what he was playing here but was never too keen on the sound. Once again Melodyne converted them perfectly and now I have them playing through Z3TA and it sounds amazing. I put some delay on it, slapped on a nice fat house beat and hey presto...instant track. This is dangerous. But best of all was a short recording of me playing a jazz chord melody on guitar that I'd forgotten about from months ago. I played it recently and thought it sounded great but for the life of me I could not remember what I was playing. Of course I could have sat down and worked out all of those chords by ear, but it was much easier to just let Melodyne do its thing and covert it to MIDI. Now I know exactly what notes I was playing. This thing is incredible.

Even though I've had Editor for a while now, the one thing I really want to do but just haven't gotten around to is singing/humming melodies and riffs and having Melodyne detect them. Even drum parts could be done that way. Hmmm... Come to think of it, I should carry a portable recorder around since I usually get most of my ideas while driving, and just can't do anything with them. Portable recorder > interface > Melodyne > new project. I like.

HA! I'd be most impressed if it will be able to separate notes on a My Bloody Valentine track! Let us know!

This sounds too cool. I'm weakening..... ! How about this? Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Sets The Blaze http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC7idLzw3ykPrimarily acoustic and female vocals - would be interested in how it can separate out the vocals.
