Melodyne and ASIO Buffer
I had a really messed-up Melodyne crashing situation and the advice from Sweetwater and Celemony was to ensure the buffer was set to 1024 samples in Preferences.
That;s fine, but here is what is bothering me about this:
1. I cut a lot of tracks with Meldoyne and an ASIO buffer of 256 without problems so I am suspicious when someone says the buffer is the issue.
2. 1024 is not even close to usable when tracking: the latency is so great the singer feels like he/she is using a slow slapback, 100% wet.
So, at this time I am tracking (recording) at 256 and then switching to 1024 for Melodyne work, but that does not seem like a normal way to work.
Thoughts?

That's how I do it. I only use Melodyne when mixing...much later.

As everybody I do get the same warning message about the buffer size when inserting melodyne, but I never bothered to increase it out of pure ignorance ... however, so far I have not experienced any problems with melodyne; so i see no reason to increase buffer size when editing / mixing ... i hope it stays like this ...

This is not an issue that is Sonar-specific. I, too, was having problems with Melodyne in Sonar, and then I found that Celemony suggests a 1024 buffer for best operation in all systems. Here's a link to their forum that gives their advice to avoid crashes. http://www.celemony.com/userforum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7555

Ive used Melodyne with ASIO buffers set allot lower. I can use it with buffers at 128 or 254 in ASIO driver mode.
It seems that there are hundreds of variables to take into account

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I have a particular vocal sound and Melodyne is an important tool for me. (No, NOT the Cher or T-Pain sound—much more subtle than that. By the way, I remember a somewhat 10cc-sounding group that used the so-called Cher sound before Cher, but I have searched and can't find it anywhere. I remember that it was on the playlist in the movie theater before the show started so I heard it a zillion times for a while and used to think it was some kind of weird vocoder things (since we didn't know about AutoTune etc then).

You should use Melodyne at a 1024 buffer. I recommend only using Melodyne while mixing, applied as a clip effect and bouncing it down after corrections. I typically track vocals, and after they are fully comped, make a copy of the track, bounce the copy down and hide the original vocal track. Then I add melodyne as a clip effect and work on any corrections.

I don't normally use Melodyne while I'm still tracking and if I do, or if I have used it on tracks I freeze them so I can safely use a smaller buffer to do more tracking. Dan

I've always used a 256 buffer with Melodyne with no issues. As CJ said.. lots of factors to be taken into account (Computer, number of active plugins, etc) I always make my melodyne edits, freeze it, copy the corrected wave to a new track, and remove melodyne from the original track. ; )
