Memorial Day Song

This is a blast from the past.... not posted specifically for review, but simply for your listening pleasure, on this day to remember the men and women who have died to make and keep this country free.

It was written in 2009 by Pat Bishop and myself. Story of a soldier..... hope you enjoy listening.

Something To Die For

Happy Memorial day...

Don't forget to thank a Veteran.

That was great! I have to ask...is that a "real" steel guitar or is it a sound font? It sounds too good to be a sound font. The fiddle also sounds to real to be a sound font? Also the resonator guitar?

This song is a co write, and the lady I asked to write it with me posted a video version of it on face book,  she didn't say a word to me..and I discovered it yesterday on the FB.... That got me to thinking that I should post it here as well as the audio version.

To answer some questions about it... yeah,,,, there was a few generations in there...places and people from my child hood. Some poetic license was also used.....

the steel, dobro, and fiddle are samples.

They say a country song is the script to a 3 minute movie.... that's what I was aiming for.... now to find the videographer and artist to do it right.....

    thanks for listening.

Wow! I never would have guessed they were samples. They sound very realistic, especially the steel. Well done!

May I ask where you got the samples for the steel guitar? I've never been able to dig up a really good sample for that. I may already have it and just didn't know it was there. I have several sampling programs installed on my DAW that I've never used in addition to my Motif. The best steel guitar sample I've come upon so far is my Motif but I've never been able to get it to sound as good as you did in this song. Perhaps I was just too impatient while drawing in the pitch bends, etc.

Pete, the steel guitar is the primary reason I bought Band in A Box.

It , and the fiddle as well as the dobro are rendered from Band in the Box, which I use to compose much of my music...kinda like a scratch pad for composition. I then open the saved BB file in it's companion program.... Real Band, which is a DAW of sorts, and in it I can add the "real tracks" for various instruments.  On one of the songs I did with RB/BB someone commented on the fiddle (not this song) saying he could hear the bow sounds, and asking how I did that.

The down side to BB/RB is that it will follow (most of the time) the chords you have placed into the BB composition. At times, it does get confused and plays the wrong things..... whereupon, you must use envelopes to silence the garbage. For the most part, however, it does a good job. Also, you can not tell it to follow a specific melody... it still doesn't ahve that ability. Right now, it "wings it" on the leads.

I too searched for a good steel guitar. I tried a few demo's, played with the midi stuff and walked away totally unsatisfied. Then I ran across BB/RB and was blown away by the sound. With a 30 day money back, I ordered it and the rest, as they say, is history. I have upgraded from time to time, and try to stay at the cutting edge with PG's stuff.  It's not too cheap, but it does things that save me a huge amount of time and money.

     And...... it sounds good too.

I hope this answers your questions.

    Hey Herb,

Very good message.  I shudder to think what it's going to take to make this generation stand up for the flag.
    Thanks for posting this.

I've always enjoyed your songs - you can write.  Only crit - more clarity on the lead vox - not sure if it's the bass or drums - more separation there.

To all who commented.... thank you. This song was a collaborative effort between myself and Pat Bishop. She tries to keep me on track when it comes to writing music & lyrics.

I'm glad this has touched your hearts in the way it has.

Yeah I've heard you do this one, it's a great song, good job Herb.

There's a great Craig Morgan cover called "God, Family and Country" that has some similar lyrics (the refrain), but the theme is universal :-)
