Yo Ed,
In England they have Remembrance Day, Nov 11th. In the Methodist choir I sang in recently, we sang this stirring song on Memorial day, and sometimes on July 4th. Despite its specifically English lyric, I think it speaks universally to a good and spiritual form of patriotism:
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.
The marriage of this elegant lyric with tune a taken from Holst's The Planets (Jupiter), to my heart and ears, makes for one of the best songs ever written. I was always swept away when we sang it. I can go on and on.Bert
