Merging two projects. - SOLVED

The answer is probably in the manual but yet to find anything on this so I am hoping someone will either point me in the right direction, or confirm its not possible.

I have two projects, I want to insert the contents of one at the end of the other. I want all the VSTs and soft synths to come across with the correct settings, I want to retain tempo changes etc.

I can copy tracks from one project and paste them, which gets me part of the way there but I then need to insert the soft synths and adjust their settings etc. (Or better save the settings as pre sets and load them in the new project).

Not that I know of. You have already described the method by copy and pasting tracks. You can't import tempo changes either as far as I know.

Short of what you've already explained I do not think there is a way to do it easily.

If you saved out each track of project 2 as a track template as that will preserve all your plugin and synth settings.

Then open those track templates in Project one. Of course you'll have to adjust where on the timeline all the track templates are and move them accordingly if you want to place that data after project one on the timeline. If that's not the case then your template tracks will just be added to the catalog of tracks you have in project one. Eg Project one has tracks 1 to 20 and you add 15 tracks from project two which would be tracks 21 to 35 occupying the same range in the timeline.

    Bet your head hurts now.

Thanks - Track templates, that seems to make sense, at least for getting the VSTs across. I will play around with that later.

Take two aspirin and jump right in. If I come up with an alternate method I'll let you know, but now I've got a headache. Lol.

I don't think Track Templates contain any note/midi data, so these would have to be copied separately once all the synths & tracks are set up.

This being the case, it would make sense to 1) do a separate bounce to clip for all the midi tracks in Project 1 so they are all 1 contiguous clip, 2) slip edit the left hand side of each one so that it starts at 01:01:000, 3) with both projects open drag/copy each one to Project 2 to wherever you've set the Now Time in Project 2. I'd make sure Snap to Grid is ON and set to Measure so they'll all line up perfectly.

What about your buss structure in P1? Do you want to replicate this in P2 or use the existing P2 structure?
    Automation?
    Meter/Key changes?
    Tempo changes?

This is potentially quite a lengthy job.

Thanks a lot - it worked. Fortunatly it was not a huge project - one instance of Kontakt with 4 tracks and one of VB3 and an audio track.

Save and Inserted Kontakt and VB3 as track templates.

Pasted the midi tracks at the right point in the time line. Remember to ensure you include all event in tracks when copying so you get the tempo changes (and the metre change between the two sections was reconised too).

Copied and pasted the audio track into the right place in the time line.  I could have probably used the track template for the audio too if there were important effects.

    Much simpler than it sounds!

Fortunatly the project was still in an early stage so there were no busses set up or any automation. The drums were just REX audio loops in the project I wanted to copy, which is very unusual for me, usually it will be Superior or BFD with several busses and a lot of effects, (mostly pro-channel).

    3) with both projects open drag/copy each one to Project 2 to wherever you've set the Now Time in Project 2.

I didn't know you could do this. I only have one open project at a time. So I can open Sonar twice (I realize I must change setting in pref's), and just drag clips to & fro?

    Yep.

In track view, just hit View > Tile in Columns for a side by side view of them both

Just make sure that under Preferences > File > Advanced you have "Allow Only One Project at a Time UNchecked

You don't even need to open SONAR twice, you can have two projects within a single instance. Just don't maximize the windows if you want to see them both at once. I definitely recommend a dual monitor setup and stretching SONAR across it for this!
