Merle Haggard Cover...........Work'in Man Blues

A few weeks ago I did a live recording of Robb Hoffman Band.
I wasn't to happy with the recording so we set up friday night
and re-recorded the whole set,  plus some covers that they do.
I've got a good start on these songs,  Mix'in them late last night.

Please give me some advise on this mix,   would love to hear some input
on how this one is translating on other systems.   Thanks !

I'm no mix expert, but this sounds good to me.  I love being able to hear the vocals clearly...but everything else is clear too...nice job, IMO.  :) Great performances too!

Man I used to play this for years in the honky tonks of NC...USA...

not a bad rendition. a bit dull sounding... the bass is subdued and so is the overall sound.

It sounds like it was recorded live.... not bad actually.

Thanks Janet, bapu and Guitarhacker for take'in the time
    to listen and comment !

Herb,  could you elaborate just alittle bit on what you think is
going south with the low end.    Enlighten me please on what
    subdued is...........  :)

I always struggle with the low end.  Every mic on stage has alot of low
frequency.   I have rolled off the lows on everything and even some on the bass.
The bass still kicks listening to the mix on my internet computer that has an old
    Delta-44 and  5 inch yamahas w/ sub.

The mix didn't sound as bright and "present" as I would expect.

The levels between the instruments were OK... but it was lacking that sizzle on the high end and definition and punch in the low end.

Thanks Herb,  I'll be going through this project this week and I'll
see if I can get some "sizzle".   Thanks for your comment.

I will say my mix's are never bright.   Could be my downfall but I don't
like bright.   I'll work on that sizzle on the high end.

Loving Merle as much as one man can love another without gettin' all sticky and stuff, and having done this song for many years live myself, I have to say I don't care for it.

That guitar ... that guitar ... it just sticks out like a sore thumb ... IMO. And the guitar's timing really drifts at the beginning of the song.

As for the mix, yeah, what the others said.

    Sorry, just being honest. :(

was this a live recording as I suspect it was?  One take? No overdubs?

That would account for a number of the issues, since as I mentioned before, it's really hard to do a decent live recording and have everything in place like you want.

For a live mix, it's not bad... better then many I have heard and done myself.

Using something like Ozone on it might be able to add the punch and sizzle without damaging it too bad. Ozone is pretty amazing in what it can do. I have used it to revive some of my old cassettes which had degraded into a mushy sound from being played and just old age.

Do you have Ozone? if not you can download the demo.... it works 100% for 10 days.. give it a try.
Using the multiband EQ & compression allows you to choose exactly what needs compressing and EQ.

I like the mix.  The voice sounds clear with the right amount of reverb.  The bass needs some punch.  Use EQ to add some highs for that and maybe use an envelop shaper to shorten the bass notes.

Tim I hate to say it, but I wasn't too thrilled with this one either.  Like Bub, I had some issues with the guitar.  Also the tone of the lead and rhythm guitars were too close for my taste.  BUT, I'm not familiar with the tune like Bub and Herb, so maybe that lick is what the rhythm guitar is supposed to be playing.  It got awfully repetitive.

The mix itself was not bad at all, given what you had to work with.  I only had it on my pc speakers, but I could hear the bass okay.

Thanks Bub and philz for your opinion,  and time to listen and post.
That is what the forum is all about,  That's what I think at least.   :)

vechung.....thanks, glad a few has liked it.
I'm going to work on the bass this week.  But will have trouble,   The bass cab
was mic'ed with a MD421 and it has alot of guitar and drum bleed,  alot.

Guitarhacker......yes, this and everthing I do is a live recording.
Live recordings is "all" I do.   I work as a live sound engineer   and love to
record rehearsals, shows, ect. and offer the band a CD of there performance.
For a small extra fee.....:)   -----       I might take a look at Ozone.   I read where
alot of you guys swear by it.      I recently bought Samplitude.   It is geared
more for mastering and has alot of multiband EQ's.    I record and mix in Sonar and then
transfer into Samp as a 32bit float file.  This mix has a mulitband EQ compressor on the master buss.........."But"  I'm still trying to learn how to use it properly.

    Thanks again Herb for helping.

    Hi Tim,

I'm not 100% sold on the guitar playing/tones but the mix sounds good from here.

    Good work on your part.
