Metronome for practice

Is there any way to use the metronome to practice without having to either Record at the same time or Playback a previously recorded timeline?

I just want to practice to a metronome.

L.

No, the metronome cannot be made to play without the transport running.

Just mute all tracks except the metronome bus and hit the play button.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

You don't have to have anything previously recorded. You just have to open Sonar, click Metronome's "enable on playback" button and start transport. I may have missed your point there but you really don't have to do anything other than that. If you are worried about cluttering up your drives with blank projects don't because if you close the project without saving (and don't create any new folders when opening the project) then nothing gets saved to disk.

However something that I've started is a project specifically for practicing. I have multiple midi bass tracks and basic drum patterns in the same project set to loop. That way I can just open that project and jam along to blues, jazz or other patterns or mute all the tracks, enable the playback metronome and practice scales.

Sonar is a pretty hefty program just to have open for just a metronome though. As was mentioned there are apps and less heavy duty options if all you want is a click track t play scales over.

After clicking the metronome module's "enable on playback" button of course. ;-p

I've actually been having a hard time with the metronome pings. I think I may need to find some better samples. I've been getting very lost trying to write/play along with the default ping samples.

Same here, but haven't sorted it out either.... I guess I'm waiting for an addictive drum pack for that!

lol... Just drag a 4/4 loop from the AD groove browser right into a track and you're good to go... but you knew that already. ;-)

I tend to take the same approach once I actually have something laid down.  Otherwise I tend to use my zoom H4n  for that.  It is one of the most hadny devices I own.  Not only is it a portable stereo or multi-track recorder, but it acts as a tuner and metronome.

Hi, dub. Man my buddy/bandmate had one of those hand held Zoom thingies with the two mics. It only did four tracks (two from the onboard mics and two inputs) but holy shiznizzle did that thing sound awesome. He'd just sit it on a table while we were gigging or practicing and the stereo files that came off those mics were better than my elaborate condenser mic, through fancy mixer, through fancy interface into fancy DAW version (we'd double team that sh*t). What a great little unit. This was a four piece acoustic ensemble too... drums, accordion, guit/vox (me... yay) and my multi talented buddy on various stringed instruments. It's like the damned thing had a little soundman living in it.

Not the best environment to mix in but it does allow you to bounce tracks.  the omboard effects are decent enough to make it a great scratch pad.  Plus it used SD cards so you can hold hours of info on it.  I did a vide ogig once where I used it to record 5 hours of live sound.

Regarding hitting play on the transport when nothing is recorded does not simply start the transport moving.  If there is nothing recorded there is nothing to play so the transport doesn't move resulting in no metronome.

A four beat loop is a simple idea though that will solve the problem. Thanks Beepster.

My metronome totally plays on an empty project.

hmm... I always insert a track though so I can hear my guitar through the program. Maybe that's what's up.

Seriously... I've done it a million times. That's how I work out riffs before I start creating a scratch track.

If there is nothing recorded there is nothing to play so the transport doesn't move resulting in no metronome.

Disable Stop At Project End in the Track View Options menu.

Ah yes. It all makes sense now. Do as this wise man says. I disabled that shortly after installing X1 I think and the setting seems to have followed me through versions so I forgot about it.

Interesting...

Mine has never worked on an empty song... In any version of Sonar...

Try what brundle said. I swear this works... again though I have a track to monitor through inserted but it sounds like others have gotten metronome action without one. Not sure what they are monitoring their instrument through but ya... Sonar can indeed be a fancy metronome. I'd go try it out without anything but I'm hell bent on scouring my apartment until it's pristine before I start messing with the rig again.

This is the exact solution to getting the metronome to play on an empty project without having to enable recording.

Thanks brundlefly.

I've posted a link but it was erased to prevent SPAM, I didn't want to SPAM but answer to OP question.

So do a Google search with "software metronome", NCH has a free one.
