Metronome not working - trial version X1

I'm trialling the trial version of X1 (I'm used to Home Studio 7XL). Whatever I do, I can't get the metronome to work. I've gone into Edit > Preferences > Metronome and tried everything I can think of. I've set it to audio, I've tried routed it to Master and directly to my Edirol UA25 interface. Nothing works.
 
I've noticed from another metronome post that on the above menu page there are two drop down boxes for "First Beat" and "Other Beats". There's nothing in these drop down boxes, nor are there any choices. That suggests this could be my problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
 
Anyone got any ideas?

I checked for those files/ that directory and they are all there. For some reason though, the drop down box is not recognising them. I've tried entering the file names in the box, but that doesn't work.
 
I've tried getting it to work using MIDI and an external sound module, but that's not working either.
 
Clearly there's a glitch somewhere.
 
As this is just the 30 day trial version, I'm not going to lose and sleep over worrying about it. It just takes some of the shine off the trial. I've been sent one of the special offer deals to upgrade to X1 Producer for only $99 US (or at least that's how the deal reads to me). I'm very tempted, but given the reported bugs, and that I'm yet to master HS7 XL, I might let it pass.
 
But there are the included Session Drummer 3 and True Pianos to tempt me....

Thanks worstcase - that could also be a contributing cause. Roland Groove Synth was included as part of the trial download, but interestingly has only two presets as part of the download. I actually have other instances of Groove Synth (e.g. as part of Home Studio 7XL), but these aren't being picked up as VST for some reason - probably because those directories aren't linked to the X1 VST mapping.
