Metronome recorded on track - every time

The metronome is being recorded on the same track I am recording on.  I can see the spikes when its recording and hear it clicking on playback - even with "Metronome during Playback" unchecked.
I have done the following to try and prevent this:
1.  Disabled "What U Hear" for the sound card.
2.  Unchecked "metronome during record" which solves the problem - but then the metronome doesn't play at all during record.

This is a new problem, as I have not encountered this the last time I used the software.

Thanks for your help!

Where are you routing the metronome output to?  Assuming you are using the audio metronome, there are two places to check:  under Options/Project/Metronome and the output of your metronome bus.

    Welcome!

Please put your PC and soundcard specs in your signature, so you don't need to rewrite them in every post.

That can easily happen if you're routing the metronome to midi and are recording on a drum track that is using the same output channel and midi device that the metronome is using.

If you're recording, you'd want to uncheck "Metronome during Recording".

But the root of the issue is most likely that you are using a PC soundcard that is set to record everything going to its output. This is an Input option in the soundcard's mixer applet that is often called "What U Hear" or "Stereo mix" or something like that. If possible, you should just be using "Line In" or "Mic In".

But some Realtek implementations don't even allow you to disable this.

I recorded my metronome yesterday... for a moment I couldn't figure out how to do it.

I had to create a bus going to my master bus so I could hear the metronome during recording... and then I had to create a send that went to an output that was hard patched back to an input so that I could record it.

So, I think the others are probably correct... iit is probably happening at your sound card... because it is not something that would happen easily by accident within SONAR.

Although, the MIDI explanation provided above is plausible... so check that as well if it applies to your situation.

    best regards,
    mike

Just incidentally, I think MOTU interfaces allow you to set up a digital loopback path via the mixer application as E-MU and RMI (and others?) do. But the latency is lower because it bypasses D/A/D conversion, so you might not have wanted to do that in your timing test.

Headphone or monitor bleed into the mic ?

Software mixer for sound card routing the playback into the input ?

I felt comfortable because it passes thru the same routing that any over dub does... so I assumed it be as in sync as any other audio I record when the latency comp is set correctly.

I'm always too lazy to do something... so yesterday I was behind the rack patching cables... and I decided I was too lazy to open up the software mixer. :-)

I guess we need to distinguish between mental laziness (not wanting to fumble around with software), and physical laziness (not wanting to fumble around with cables).

I tend to be more physically lazy, so I use the mixer path and change my latency compensation accordingly.

The outbut bus of my metrone goes to Bus 3.  I tried changing the output bus to different buses, but it still gets recorded.

I'm not routing the metronome to midi.  I'm using The Audio metronome to Bus 3.

Look at your SB cards mixer and Im sure its being re-routed to the recorded audio track somewhere.

Meaning you changed the Input selection to Line or Mic In from "What U Hear" or Stereo Mix? that should have done the trick?

Bottom line is that the only way the Metronome gets recorded in SONAR is if the output is routed back to the input, either by your soundcard's mixer or by a physical signal path. SONAR can't do it alone (much to the chagrin of many).

With the SB mixer make sure you disable ( red X)  all but your mike/line input. Then set the Record to Mike/Line in.
Are you using a outboard mixing board for playback and input?
