Metronome sound faintly recorded and I CAN'T find the solution!!
Hi all, I have scoured the web trying to solve my problem with no success. I'm sure you have all heard of people saying that they have the metronome sound being recorded in with their tracks. I didn't even notice it until last night because it is so faint, but it is there. I have an m-audio fast track usb interface where my sound is being recorded through. I also have playback enabled through it. My on board sound card is enabled, but I have made sure that the stereo mixer aspect has been disabled, so that should make sure the record what you hear mumbo jumo should not be happening right? So basically I can't figure out why the metronome sound is still being recorded in my tracks! Any pointers of things to try would be very welcome. I just don't know if it's related to a setting for the windows audio, cakewalk, or the m-audio interface. Also, I am on Windows Vista. Thanks!

It's probably not being recorded in the tracks. There is an option to enable the metronome on playback as well as recording.... if that is turned on, you will hear it on both record & playback. A good way to check, however, is to export the song. If you can hear the metronome there.... then it is being recorded. Check in your metronome settings and be sure the playback is disabled.

Thanks for the reply! I've checked that and I don't have the metronome enabled in playback. I also exported the song and I can hear it in there as well. It's very faint, so when my guitar is playing it's barely audible, but during the silent parts it's a little easier to hear.

I'm just recording my guitar. The guitar goes directly into the m-audio fast track usb interface and then I run speakers from the m-audio device so I can hear what I'm playing. I also tried unplugging the guitar and recording, but the metronome sound is still there. Does that make sense?

Are you using the audio or MIDI metronome?

yeah good point greg.... I never use the MC metronome. From the very start I would set up the midi drums on channel 10... then use staff or PRV to create a midi measure and copy it out. Kick drum on 1 & 3 with snare on 2 & 4.... I found it makes a much better sounding metronome than the cake metronome. Since it's in a track, you can mute it, alter it, replace it, or use it as the drum track.

I just looked and I am using the Audio metronome. I also noticed something else. on the back of the Fast Track USB there is a button that you can press that switches between Line and Guitar. When it's on Line I don't hear the metronome sound, but I don't think the recording sounds very good. I'll try the midi metronome, and if that fails, just say screw it and make a metronome like Guitarhacker suggests.

Just tried the midi metronome and it works fine, it goes through my sound card instead of my usb interface. One other thing...is there anyway I can filter out the metronome sounds that are already on my existing recorded tracks? I really don't want to have to re-record everything.

no, not really. you can try to EQ them out, but you'll likely cause the guitar sound to be changed as well.

If you want to try an experiment. Record the metronome at the exact tempo you had it set for the song(s). Reverse the phase of the recorded metronome, then import that reversed-phase metronome back into your songs and line up the beats exactly with the beats that got mistakenly recorded in the song. Theoretically, that would eliminate, or greatly reduce the metronome you hear in your recordings. Might be easier to re-record.

Thanks for the tip, but I'll probably just re-record! And thanks again for all the help everyone.

Sorry for the newb input, if this has been covered, but I use Midi tone as the metronome, playback disabled, and I, too, get a faint metronome on playback. Confused...any thoughts?

try the audio metronome - i've never had much success with the midi one. also - make sure that your soundcard is not set to record "what you hear" - that setting will be different depending on what soundcard you have.
