Mic Modeler?

Theoretically, I would imagine it works best when your input is a fairly flat mic with good frequency coverage. You can't amplify frequencies that aren't being captured. Also, mics react differently depending on the dynamic and placement, so I'm not sure how well that can be modeled. That being said, definitely try out the demo and see how well it works for YOU.

I used it quite a long time ago and thought it was useful. But as Greg said, you have to start out with a sound that is fairly flat and flexible for transformation. Don't expect miracles as from making water into wine, but possible improvements are within reach with some experimentation. 

A poor quality recording will not yield improvement, however, if this is what you have to start out with.

Most importantly, remember that "Microphone Modeler first compensates for the characteristics of the original mic, then imposes the curve of the target microphone." So if your mic is one of those listed, you will have a good starting point for transformation. There will be a drop down menu of microphones availbale for both source and target microphones.

I've used this in the past. Never owned it myself but we did try to compare the results with some of the originals. It didn't even come close in our tests. However, it was still pretty good! The results were sometimes amazing and highly usable. Back then we treated recordings done with Behringer mics, Sm58s etc. Cheap dynamics mostly, and even if the end result never sounded like a U87 it was definitely a much better sounding track after we ran it through this plug. But then we started buying more expencive mics...

I thought this was discontinued as well. I might look into it as my former studio partner owned the lisence and took it with him when we closed down. If it's really, really cheap  I might...

But I just bought it . I figured what the hell.
It's $50 off today and even if it isn't great I'm sure it'll still get some use even if only in an effects aspect.

Oh and my main recording styles seem to be Blues, Rock or Metal.
Probably because I don't advertise and they're all people I've played with in the past.

The Mac OS X versions of Microphone Modeler will not be updated for compatibility with Intel Macs, nor will the PC versions be updated for Vista. It remains available for download by current owners who are still running compatible systems, but please note that we do not offer technical support relative to its use in unsupported operating systems.


I saw this on the Antares MM site. Can it still be bought when its discontinued? Apparently so.
