Mic Preamp to Babyface Pro, how to Gain Staging?

hello,
 
i want to use an external mic preamp for my rme babyface pro.
but i dont know how to adjust the totalmix Instr. 3

can you guys explain me what to do?

 
this is how my mixer looks like, i got settings like:
 
-10dBV +4dBu 
Gain
Width
FX Send
MS Proc
L / R

    i just set my input gain on my preamp to wherever i need to get what i want...
    and the output i set for a nice level coming into totalmix....
    no need to put the gain up at all,
    unless your preamp output is weak,
    which shouldn't be, if you have gain staged correctly.

    Take the track off stereo. +4dbu.

    If you want, you can use the Rme preamp like a trim control too help get the level dialed in, but this isn't necessary.
