Mic placement: Harpist recording

I am going to record my first Harpist. I would like to know if anyone has recorded a harp and what would be an ideal mic placement for the recording.

Any ideas are welcome.

Is the harp the only instrument in the mix or just one in a band ? If it's the only thing going on mic it in stereo with condensor mics and maybe a third for center channel for focus if you need it. On soft spots you can sneak in the center close mic and you won't have to compress so much and cause the noise floor to go up.

If it's going to be mixed with a band and paned then one mic will do just put it where the harp sounds good when you monitor and think about what you need for the mix. If you have other insturments in the low range then you don't have to capture so much from the harp just get the range you will hear in the mix.

It is going to be a solo harpist recorded for a demo.

when you say stereo, do you mean:

    Mic1 > harp <Mic2

    or

    Mic1> h
    ______a
    ______r
    Mic2> p

How would you listen to the instrument ? I would think both mix in X-Y at one side of the insturment would be close to the way you would hear it. Having one on each side would be some un-natural sounding stereo but if that's the effect you are going for try it.

Seems like it would be hard to make a harp sound ugly. Wouldn't it be like mic'ing a piano? I was in a session with an upright and the engineer had one mic. at the high and and one at the low end, plus maybe a room mic. This was to be mixed with a band. For a solo performance, getting the ambience of the room would add a lot. Maybe try some mics at different places in the room to have something to play with in mixing.

Yes please post something on this. I would think it would be like micing a grand piano.
