Mic preamp into audio interface

This is regarding the proper method of connecting a mic preamp with XLR outputs (e.g. Great River MP-2NV) to an audio interface with XLR/TRS combo inputs (e.g. Focusrite Saffire Pro 40).

First of all, is this assumption correct:  You need an XLR>TRS cable, to bypass the preamps on the audio interface?

Second, where do you set the gain/level on the audio interface?  I've typically set this in the middle (12 o'clock); does it matter?  Does setting it lower or higher affect sound quality or noise floor?

Cheers all!

you want to come out of a mic-pre into line inputs on your focusrite.  I don't know the unit, but basically you don't want to come out of your MP-2NV into another mic-pre on your focusrite.  If you have to - you can do it, but it will be hot.  Anytime I've ever tried this I had to have the gain all the way down on the audio interface and then had to figure it out on the mic-pre.

Basically, if you have line in's on your focusrite - use those...then just adjust the in/out gain on the mic-pre for levels.

Thanks Ken.  I will have the focusrite soon.  Perhaps when you plug a TRS cable into one of the "mic/line" inputs it deactivates the gain knob for that channel.  But if the gain knob on the focusrite remains active, where would that be best set?  I would want to set it and not touch it again, making all adjustments on the mic-pre (assuring no sound degradation).

Here is the back of the unit for clarification:

I, too, don't know about the focusrite.  I would suppose it has line ins, which you would want to use coming out of the Great River.

Many interfaces have combo ins (both XLR and 1/4 inch in one input) that will sense if the signal is mic level or line level.  Usually, the signal goes in through the preamp but is then padded (the Presonus stuff I had worked this way).  Sometimes it pads the signal down from guitar level - DI.  There is often a switch for this.

You can run a line output (from the GR, for exampe), into another preamp.  Most of the "consumer" interfaces have a clean sound and simply bump the level up to line.  I've done it w/ my TC interface w/ no bad artifacs.  Not recommended, but it will work.  Esp. if your Focusrite has only preamp ins - which I doubt.  Almost all interfaces will allow you to input a stereo line someplace for synths, etc.

Take a look at the stats/specs at the focusrite site and see what they say.
