Microphone and singer test
Here are two one takes we grabbed yesterday while testing out a microphone. I'm thinking of using them as scratch tracks. The singer thinks he may like the mic we used last time better. We're gonna try again and see if one or the other really shines... but I'm liking this one because it seems to have a really smooth lower mid range. I figured I'd post these as we think about building up some arrangements for accompaniment and get ready to sing them for real: There is a lo-cut on the vocals and some CSR plate on the master bus that I used for the monitor mix. http://www.harmoniccycle....ls_Cousin-Williams.mp3 http://www.harmoniccycle....nd_Cousin-Williams.mp3 Let me know if you have any ideas. best regards, mike

If there will significantly more instrumentation eventually, it's hard to give any comment on how these will sit in a mix. Having said that, the first one (Seven Spanish Angels) sounds good to me, it's smooth and warm. The 2nd has a slight harshness to my ears, but that could be down to the performance. On a side note - is the 2nd one an intended harmony to a lead vocal? If not, it's an odd take on the melody of that song.

to me... just popped in on the beginnings of both tracks.... they sounded similar. Quick listen on computer speakers. Both sounded pretty good. I assume one mic...same singer. The test was nice and clean.... so I see no problem.

Not commenting on the mics but I REALLY like this. I love it like it is but am looking forward to hearing the addition of the other instruments being added as well. Sounding good Mike

edit -reread the intro and realized I misunderstood what was being asked. Not sure what I am supposed to comment on now, if anything, as its only one mic and the same voice. No way to tell if the other mic suits his voice or not.

Well it is rather impossible to do a A & B test with different songs. To me it sounds as they already said one and the same singer and one and the same mic.

These are good songs and recordings, but it's impossible to know which mic is better without more information. Perhaps you could post the same song using the other mic?

Hi everyone, Sorry for creating confusion with a poorly chosen thread title. We were testing the mic but we weren't comparing it head to head. We aren't trying to develop the opinion of which mic sounds better when scrutinized at 24/96. We are trying to figure out if something about the sound of this mic makes the singer sing better into the mic. Cousin Williams stopped in and sang 8 songs as a kick start and we are going to see where it goes. When I asked for ideas I was thinking about the arrangements and instrumentation. I want to keep it simple so as to high light the vocals... so I want to be very sensitive to how we build up the songs. I'd like to make each song seem a bit more unique by mixing and matching the instrumentation with the play list in mind. Stuff like that. In any event, thanks for listening and I apologize again if the thread title caused confusion. best regards, mike

Ah... gotcha. Well if you want my advice about song development etc... I would say... don't. The world does not need any more country music with corresponding nasty twangs and fake "good ol' boy" accents. (I am joking of course, I just have nothing useful to give WRT song development in this genre other than he sounds great and you are on the right track I think - encourage him to project more like he does on the second link as that works well for him - mic sounds fine).

Thanks for the comments Shad. We are feeling that the piano parts are a bit rushed... I had mentioned it when we were tracking and Cousin Williams recognized it the next day on playback. Having these scratch tracks helps me get organized and prepared for the next go round. I played some bass and guitar on the "Always on MY Mind" track yesterday but I'm still searching for the parts that serve the song and support it while staying out of the way. best regards, mike
