Microsoft Edge is dead! Hoorah!
I read an article on the German online tech site Chip.de about MS killing Edge, or more specifically, its rendering engine EdgeHTML. It's replacement (could be named Edge) will be based on the Chromium open-source project, just like Chrome, Opera and a couple of others (not Firefox...yet). It could very likely ship with the Win10 1903 update in April. Edge never got above 5% usage share. According to the metrics firm, Edge was often used only once. To download Chrome or Firefox.

I am one of the 5%, Edge is my favourite browser, I will use Firefox for the odd compatability issue. I uninstall Chrome if some malware or the grandkids install it on any of my computers. I just don't like it, like I don't like onions.

I sure some still use IE. I'm not a fan of the feature less browers. I still like my menus which Chrome ditched. With the newer Firefox so many great extensions like DownThemAll no longer work and there is no replacement. Roboform doesn't work as well in Firefox. I guess if you miss the old Firefox extensions then you can use Seamonkey.

Most of my IE/edge usage is at work, because a lot of places I have worked have dictated support of MS browsers. When I do development projects at home, I usually don't bother to change Visual Studio's browser option so I guess I use edge there too.

I use Edge on my Windows phone (yes, I still have a windows phone) and on my laptop (Win10). Some sites only really work well with Edge while some work better with Chrome. I agree with Glyn Barnes, I find Chrome acts up - it's like bloatware. On older systems it renders internet browsing as enjoyable as the early days of dial-up services. I uninstall all add-ons & extensions as they make life hell. One thing that is really annoying now is that, because I live in Europe, every time I open a US site I have to accept cookies and terms and conditions (which I never read) leading to tons of spam and what not. Something to do with the new European internet law.

Microsoft has a browser? Gosh, I learn something new every day. I migrated from IE to Firefox long ago, but eventually moved to Chrome during a particularly bad time for Firefox when a series of bad releases had made it next to impossible to use. It's much better now, and I still use it when I want to bring up a second browser on a different screen. There was also a great download manager for FF that I used to use for big downloads, until FF broke it. I should check if it works again, because it was very helpful for multi-gigabyte sample library downloads (faster, and could resume failed downloads).

DownThemAll was the program. And no it's not working. The site hasn't had a entry since Dec 2017 and when that entry was made it wasn't very promising. And as far as I can tell and from what I can gather, (and this is my summary of what I found out) something about the Chromium browser doesn't support the d/l'ing of files in the manner that we are all looking for. And there are a ton of us looking too!! The only thing I found for Chrome is was Chrono Download Manager and it's not much better than Chromes built in down loader. I am using Edge on this site due to Chrome not working with all the extras. Go to last post, Go To Top button, and such. I am finding that Chrome is going the way of Internet Explorer in that MS tried to dictate what would happen on the web in the way that it wanted (anyone remembers Active X?) and now Google is dictating what will be supported in the Chromium browser everyone is moving to. Haven't been using FF lately but will give it a whirl soon. burgerproduction ...on my Windows phone (yes, I still have a windows phone)
I do too!! Still a damn good phone. And now the prices they want for new phones is really over the top. I mean 1K for a damn phone?

I've given up on Google Chrome after having various different problems with it on different computers. It's either been random crashes, annoying popups or unwanted add-ons getting installed without permission. I don't get these sorts of problems with Firefox or Opera. But I like onions.

Yep, that's the one. I loved it when it was working. Would love to find a replacement. I wonder why downloaders necessarily have to be tied to a browser in the first place. Seems like it should be possible to write one that's platform-independent. As I type this I am downloading a multi-gigabyte sample library using Chrome's intrinsic downloader, and five of the seven files have failed with a cryptic "network error" (whatever that means). Fortunately, it does have the ability to resume a failed transfer without having to restart the entire download.

I tend to agree, but companies should at least support the current standards, instead of constantly re-inventing their own. Anyone who has done any web development curses Microsoft on a daily basis for having to constantly find workarounds for their browsers because they behave differently to Firefox/Chrome.

use firefox ffs -it's up to date on all the latest gubbins, is generally standards compliant (more than the other browsers) and it 's open source, so you can literally go and have a look at the code to see what it's doing... all the others are scraping your data (chrome was recently caught logging people into everything it could, without permission!)

That applies to anyone who has done any kind of development in the Microsoft universe. My software integrates with Word and Excel, and my code is littered with "if this version, do it this way, else do it another way" switches. I can't run every version of Office ever released on my testbeds, so those code branches are often put there in response to users encountering unforeseen problems. How many Microsoft engineers does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they just change the standard to "dark".

I agree! FF is fast and stable, it renders pages properly (unlike the crome based browsers, which inherit the same problem with the text rendering, for example).

If you still have a warm spot for Navigator, take a look at SeaMonkey! The appearance is definitely a throwback. I used Netscape Navigator as my go-to back in the days! The SeaMonkey project is a community effort to develop the SeaMonkey all-in-one internet application suite (see below). Such a software suite was previously made popular by Netscape and Mozilla, and the SeaMonkey project continues to develop and deliver high-quality updates to this concept. Containing an Internet browser, email & newsgroup client with an included web feed reader, HTML editor, IRC chat and web development tools, SeaMonkey is sure to appeal to advanced users, web developers and corporate users.
Under the hood, SeaMonkey uses much of the same Mozilla source code which powers such successful siblings as Firefox and Thunderbird. Legal backing is provided by the Mozilla Foundation. https://www.seamonkey-project.org/
