The video would not paly for me (here at work). Since I don't know what it is or what it can or can't do, that makes me want it even more.

there is a few things.. speaking of it.. and actual products. .well different things.. the MS table.. yer great.. maybe it comes with a disclaimer for back pain / neck ache.. ergonomically , not so great. I'm seeing "meta data" being used in every aspect of things.. it's like todays current buzz words

I think you're underestimating this development. It's not only a logical extension of existing tech, it *is* existing tech. Most camera's and peripherals already have some linux version hidden inside somewhere. This is just a rounding up of loose parts, and making something much bigger of the parts. I predict this will make the cellphones as technically cool as a early seventies digital watch. Within 2 years, probably less, since the parts are already here.

Just what I need. I have customers come in with the Blue tooth ear piece. We don't know if they are talking to us or on the phone. When we ask them, do you need help, we get some of the funniest looks. I'm about to put a sign in the window no Cell phones allowed. Now, I can just see it. We will have customers poking there fingers into space and poking someone's eye out Tech is good but how much does someone need to be wired all the time. I had two customers on Sunday upset that I couldn't check stock at a distributor. Their site was down for maintenance. I said I could call them on Monday, both were - never mind I'll look elsewhere. Funny thing is, I looked at home on Sunday night. The Dist. site was back up. Both of the items which are exclusive to that dist. are new releases and not out yet. I can just see someone with that device waving his/her hands around in a frantic trying to find information. When the system fails, they will have a nervous breakdown. Ed

I understand your concern. In at least one SF novel that comes to mind (Snow Crash) there is a version of such people, nicknamed gargoyles, for all the extra equipment they are carrying. He uses them quite well in the book, the main character even has a pass at it, but it's too engrossing. Those people are indeed only half-listening to what you are saying, and could sound like verbalized google-returns in stead of real people, I agree. Then again, cellphones took getting used to, and for some they still *take* getting used to - yet they may disappear into a minichip as fast as they arrived. Who knows. People will find ways around the worst inconveniences, I think - and since miniaturisation is still going strong, it might at least do us the great favour of becoming (nearly) invisible.

Also the fact it's free.. so a good choice.hehe A friend used to do control software for petrol pumping statsions, so obviously that needed to be 100%.

Yeah, Linux has not replaced Windows on the desktop, it just disappeared into the woodwork and has taken over the rest of the planet, computingwise. Run it embedded on XP, from a USB stick, or plug in a wallwart that doubles as a full server. Urgh. Seems Bill Gates has been napping, somewhat. Always the problem with generals preparing themselves for the previous war, while missing out on all the signs of a new era.

I know the principal engineer at MS who was helping to develop the SDK for the surface technology, he just got laid off. They're not putting a lot of money into this and here is the issue. As a table it has limited appeal. If they can make this work without the load of the table i.e. into standard glass plates connected to an external system which does not rely on direct projection, but can display into the glass, then they will have something. Standby.

ORIGINAL: InstrEd I'm about to put a sign in the window no Cell phones allowed. There's a deli in downtown Chicago that had a no cell phones allowed rule and the proprietor ran anyone using a cell phone out of the deli if they refused to hang up! I loved that, it was hysterical.
