Midi Event Filter basics
Hello! I'm trying to use the Midi Event Filter, and can't seem to get it to work. I've added it as an FX on a MIDI track with the output routed from that track to a softsynth track. I've placed a midi event logger on that track to test the filtering. It seems that regardless of how I set the options, all the midi events show up on the second track. I've tried including and excluding all and the bypass button; nothing seems to ever get filtered. The only possibility I've thought of is that it works only when going to external devices rather than internal routing? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Hartley Cincinnati, Ohio

I've added it as an FX on a MIDI track with the output routed from that track to a softsynth track. I'm not clear on how you've got this set up. You can't route the output of a MIDI track to another MIDI track; you assign it to a soft synth in the synth rack, and that's the end of the line - unless maybe the soft synth has a MIDI Thru capability and has MIDI Output enabled so that it can act as an input port for another MIDI track (probably not the case here). EDIT: I'm guessing what you have is a Simple Instrument track (a combined MIDI and Audio track) with a second MIDI track assigned to the same synth. I didn't think SONAR would let you do that because I know it won't let you create a Simple Instrument track when more than one MIDI track points at the same synth, but I just tried it, and it does let you add a MIDI track and assign its output to a synth that is already part of a Simple Instrument track. In that case, what you've got is two MIDI source tracks for the one synth, and the MIDI track that is part of the Simple Instrument track will not see anything coming from the other MIDI track, filtered or otherwise. They're both driving the synth as parallel inputs to it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the midi filter fx on a midi track which has a midi clip in it. The output of this track is routed to the soft synth track which has the midi event logger on it. I see all the events arrive on the softsynth track regardless of how I set the midi filter. I've also tried added the filter as an fx to the clip itself, but still get the same result. Later, Hartley

The output of this track is routed to the soft synth track which has the midi event logger on it. Sorry, but it's still not quite adding up. As I said, you can't route a track to another track, so the way you are describing the routing still doesn't make sense. Are you saying the "Soft Synth" itself is a MIDI event logger plugin? In any case, The MIDI event filter functionality is pretty straight-forward. Initially, it passes everything. If you want to block something, you check the box for that event type, and raise the lower limit or lower the upper limit to narrow the range of what passes. If you want to create a "hole in the middle" where events above and below a specified range are passed, you can set the "upper" limit to a lower value than the"lower limit". The way this is set and displayed is a little buggy, but it works. If you describe exactly what you're trying to filter out, I might be able to help. But I think there may be something wrong with your setup for seeing the effect of the filter.

Yes, the soft synth is a VST plugin that does midi event logging. The goal is to filter our cc 64's (sustain) from a piano midi clip so the sound doesn't get muddied up playing it other instruments besides piano. But, as I said earlier, I've tried include and exclude all just to experiment but I always see all events show up in the logger.

Okay. Since you are trying to create the "hole in the middle" as I described, you are probably running into the buggy behavior I mentioned. See the post linked below for how to set this up. In this case I wanted to filter out CC123, but the principle is the same: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=2084133&mpage=1#2089027

Your link doesn't seem to work right; it takes me to the Cakewalk forums homepage, not a specific post.

Sorry bout that. Seems they've changed the way message linking works, or maybe it's because it's in the old SONAR Producer forum. Anyway, try the revised link.

OK, I got the link and from some quick testing, I think we've made progress. It's late here, I'll finish testing and update the thread again tomorrow. Thanks, Hartley
