Midi Expression & SI Strings (and other VSTs)

Am I being really old fashioned trying to use Midi Expression controllers?

I've always like to use Expression Ctrl 11 to produce 'temporary' fade outs during a midi track (such as a long note fading away at the end of a phrase). I know I could use audio fade outs and automation, but I always find that these can only really be done once you've set your overall audio levels (which I don't do until the mixdown phase).

In the 'good old days' of midi only, the idea was to use expression for minor, relative changes within the song (i.e. fade ins/outs, and maybe a swell into the chorus etc.) and use midi volume for overall mixing (so you can change the overall mix volume without impacting the subtle variances).

It seems that many of the VSTs these days don't respond to Midi Expression by default. I've found how to map this in SampleTank using the 'Learn' function, but now I need a fade out in SI Strings.....  Is it possible to configure SI Strings to respond to Midi Expression?

Or is there something similar in Audio automation that I should be using instead? I'm not in a position to record a fader movement for this particular fade-out as I am still adjusting the overall levels throughout the arrangement process. Is there an 'audio expression' I can use off fade outs?

I take it back, looks like SI Strings does respond to expression - there was some confusion over Midi Channels that I think was stopping it from working :)

Is there a difference between copying a midi clip from track to track, and copying individual notes from track to track?
Somehow I ended up with notes on two different midi channels on the same track??
