Midi Input monitoring question

Could somebody please explain why this is happening?

Input MIDI USB 88 key
Output is a delta RBUS

A lot of the time all my MIDI tracks work great.  They output ONLY when they're active.  I really don't recall needin to have the input monitor button for the track pressed....either its "off" or they're ALL on.

THen....for no damn good reason....I get no midi output.  I scratch my head, check my MIDI devices, every thing is there.  I reboot; nuthin.  I google...somebody mentions MIDI INput monitor button and my lightbulb flickers to life.  I push the button and voila: sound.  .....BUT ....when I press ANOTHER track's Input Monitor button and play I hear BOTH damn tracks regardless of which one I'm on.

My "input" on each track is set to "88 key" and OMNI...now before you jump all over "omni" consider that I've ALWAYS had it on Omni.

All I want is to get back to the active track playing & the others not responding to the keyboard (til THEY"RE active).

I also get this occaisonal "no sound....no sound....wtf?.......BAM! (all the stored up key hits come out at once)"   Sumpin fishy goin on......

Lil help?

Check the setting under Sonar Preferences/Midi - one of them is "always echo selected midi track" (or similar). Then if no other track's input echo is manually turned on, you should hear only the selected track being triggered by your keyboard.

sometimes all you have to do is press the play buton to start the midi engine.
midi is a little finicky with me sometimes too.so its not just you.
i fing that even sometimes if i check my inputs and change my i.o and then change it right back again, vola, its there working.

make believe its a chick and study her habits.
youll find a way sooner or later to know that trick that gets it workning everytime.

As Charlie has said that's almost certainly caused by your audio engine being off, the input notes are sat in your buffer and when the engine is turned back on you then get to hear them.

Go to Preferences-->Audio-->Playback & Recording and check "Play effect tails after stopping". That should sort that one out for you.

What sound card and driver are you using?

I opt to not use OMNI and have the keyboard sending on channel 6. No particular reason for channel 6 over any other.... just as long as it's not omni.

That puts my midi on a specific channel and I can edit the inputs of the midi tracks to reflect either NONE or channel 6 depending on if I want to work/edit that track with new live midi or not.

I have defaults all around for Omni and for the echo.

If I have 5 midi tracks, whichever track that is in focus, that is was selected, will play midi sounds for the synth that track has assigned.

If I have ALSO selected additional midi tracks to be heard, by clicking on additional Echo buttons, then their synth sounds will be added into what is being played.

As long as I rely on the auto echo button, and do not manually select additional track echo buttons, I ONLY hear the midi for the track in focus, which is just how I am wanting it to be.

Playback will still play all non-muted tracks with data, so that's not a problem, and just because each midi track has input assigned to omni doesn't mean they all play - it's the combination of focus and echo as to what gets heard (obviously not dealing with mute here).
