Midi Latency - and this is not audio!

I have suddenly found that hitting notes on the keyboard sound exactly on time.... and then a few seconds later repeat.  It's all midi - I'm not using soft synths or recording audio, or using the sound card as a midi output.  I suspect it might be the midi interface (m audio midiman anniversary edition, 2X2) - as one of the indicator lights goes on when the delayed sound come through - but I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced/heard of this kind of problem before I start contacting m-audio.

I'm using an HP Windows 7 pro g7 laptop 4g memory, 2.6 Ghz speed.  Cakewalk Music Creator 5.05 (got the update).  The midi man is hooked up to a Casio psr225 and a Roland TD3 module for drum kit.  And this wasn't happening yesterday - and I haven't changed any settings on the computer.

If anyone got a clue on this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Do you have System restore turned on?
If so, go into it, and select Restore to an Earlier Time.
I suspect the screen will show an event yesterday, which hopefully triggered the creation of a restore point. It will most likely be a System Update @ xx:xxPM. If such an event did occur, restore to an earlier point.
This may not be the problem, but if you did nothing else to change anything, this is the first place I would look.

It may be Input Echo. The first note you hear is when you hit the key. The second note is MC sending the MIDI data to the keyboard to be played.

I Hear an Echo When I Record
If you have input monitoring enabled, when you play an instrument that is plugged into your sound card, you hear the direct signal that goes straight through your sound card, and an instant later you hear the sound that is processed by SONAR, including any plug-in effects you may be using. Only the processed sound is recorded.
You can eliminate the echo in either of two ways:
Mute the direct signal so you only hear the sound that is processed by SONAR. If you choose this method, you may hear too much of a lag between the time you play your instrument and the time you hear it, depending on the latency of your system (using WDM audio drivers is a great way to achieve lower latency). Disable input monitoring so you only hear the raw signal that's coming through your sound card. If you choose this method, you won't hear any plug-in effects you may be using.
    To disable input monitoring:
On the track where you want to disable input monitoring, click the track's Input Echo button so that it is in the off position:

Before I saw this I tried installing the Windows 7 drivers for the m-audio.  After that the problem went away - hitting a note on the keyboard instantly lit up the "B" outpout indicator light (which is the keyboards midi connection) and there was no echo.  I checked the event logs - and while there were some errors, given that it's now working after upgrading the drivers, I didn't think want to go to an earlier restore point.  But thanks for the suggestion.  We'll see if it was just a case of not having the latest drivers.

I was able to get this to work - installed the latest drivers from m-audio's site - but I tried to see if I could reproduce the error with the echo.  I tried turning it on/off and testing, but couldn't reproduce the delayed sound, or the delay when recording.  What you describe about echo seems to match what was happening, but I couldn't duplicate the error.  It may just have been the drivers, and maybe it was automatically doing an "echo" because.  But I'll keep this in mind if this happens again.  Thanks.

Once you get it solved...let it be. Don't go trying to reproduce the problem....
