Midi Legato and repeat

Hi, first of all let me tell you that I'm a brand new X2 user coming from Pro Tools. I'm just discovering a new world right now and for the moment I'm facing a couple of problems in Midi ( that I use a lot) : 1) is there a way to select some notes and do a force legato with or without overlapping? I mean selecting many notes and force the lenght to 1/8 or 1/16 etc 2) is there a way to select , let me say, all the notes in two bars and make them repeating N times with a one off command without doing control+c every time ? Thanks a lot for your help Ramp

If the part is quantized, and the time intervals are consistent, you can just use the Event Inspecter to set them all to a length that makes them legato. If the start timing and/or lengths are variable, you'll want to try using Process > Run CAL > Legato.CAL

For repeating measures, right-click on the clip, and choose Groove Clip Looping (or Ctrl-L). Then drag the right-end of the clip to roll out as many repetitions as needed.

Thanks, Jonbouy, and cheers to you. My studio went down with a dead interface early this year, and I decided to take advantage of it and pursue some other interests (mostly outdoor stuff) for a while. Now that the weather is turning, it's a good time to get back to making music... and surfing the forum.

I've tried the legato script (And a bunch of others) but I can never get it to work on selected notes in the PRV. Sometimes a lonely note somewhere will get changed, but I can never get the scripts to work consistently.

If anyone has any tips on using CAL and get the scripts to actually do something it would be awesome.

Depends on the script. Cakewalk no longer formally supports CAL, and makes no special effort to ensure that newer versions of SONAR are compatible with any particular script. That said, CAL scripts still work for the most part, especially if it just involves manipulating note and controller event parameters. But most of them were written by 3rd parties, and not exhaustively tested against every possible input scenario.

You can open up a problem script in Notepad to see if there are any usage notes in it, and if you have the knowledge and time to learn a little bit about the scripting language, it can help to understand exactly what the script is trying to do. There is at least one pretty detailed guide to CAL available on the Web.

You can use Process | Find/Change to set the lengths of the notes.  For example, if you are using 960 ticks per quarters (as set in Preferences), changing all the 480 will make everything eighth notes.

I have not had any problems getting legato passages by using Quantize, but NOTE that Sonar's default has duration set to OFF.  You want to check duration in the Quantize dialog box so that all the note lengths will quantize.

You can also do a Select by Filter to select notes that are within a certain duration before you use Quantize.

Not sure if that helps but maybe it will be useful as some point.

Sonar, like most DAWs, is pretty deep, but you should get going pretty quickly given that you have the concepts already and just need to know the mechanics.  Sonar started as a MIDI sequencer so I would be surprised if you need anything it doesn't have somewhere.

Hi How can you change a lenght of many events at the same time using Event Inspecter ? I tried RunCAL > Legato.CAL , it works quite well , except for the fact that it leaves out first and last event selected , don't know why Thanks for your help Ramp

Select the notes, click in the Duration field in the Event Inspector (add toolbar module if it's not already showing), and enter one of:

    1. A fixed amount that will be added/subtracted to each event by entering a value in ticks or M:B:T format with a "+" or "-" in front of it.
    2. A single value in ticks or M:B:T format to which all events will be set.
    3. A  percentage (with "%" symbol) by which you would like to increase or decrease existing durations proportionally.
