Midi Overdubing problem?
Hi,
I hope someone can help me, I've tried a quick search of the Forum but can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. Basically can I switch off or change the midi overdub recording / comping behaviour?
I'm trying to record an overdub part on an Addictive Drums VST track, (hand claps over drum beat), but I can't hear the original drums when recording I can only hear the hand claps - and it deletes the original drum part while creating a new midi file?!
This seems to be new behaviour in X3 as I was able to do this fine in previous versions of Sonar, (8.5, X1, X2). I'm guessing it has something to do with the quick 'intelligent' comping that has been introduced in X3
Any advice welcome

(If I have an existing midi track with drum data, and want to add something like a tambourine or hand claps, I usually add that as an additional midi track that points to the same drum synth, since I would want to make controlling its volume and other characteristics to be easier than if it is merged in with the existing data, so I may not be of much help here for you). It has changed in X3 - just left click and hold (or right click) on the record button and choose sound on sound rather than comping and you will hear what you played previously and overdub.

Hi Bob, Many thanks, that link solved the problem! I needed to change the default mode in X3 from 'comping' to 'Sound on Sound' using right click on the Master Record button!  Comping - (Default mode) When recording, previously recorded material on the track is not heard. When a recording is done, the newly recorded material is heard and all other takes are time-muted for the duration of the new material. Overwrite - The new material replaces (overwrites) any existing material. This means that portions of existing clips may be “wiped clean” to make room for newly recorded material. While recording, you will not be able to hear material from existing clips. Sound on Sound -The new material is merged with any existing material. This means that any existing clips on the track are left unchanged and all newly recorded material is stored in new clips. While recording, you will be able to hear material from existing clips. I thought it had something to do with the new Comping features Cheers!!

Aah. She does OK, but I have to watch that she doesn't get all hopped up on catnip. She turns into a real ANIMAL when she does that kitty krack.
Plus, she WAY overplays Pussycat Riot - she claims it's a protected free speech expression thing, but I think she is politically motivated. Definitely has an agenda.
