Midi Pattern Brush, Note Length/Snap Question
Couple questions. 1. Is the midi pattern brush still available for midi editing? I can't seem to find it. 2. In "pre X1 days", whatever midi note length was selected, edited or used last would be remembered untill I changed the note again to a different length (1/4, 1/16, etc). Besides the "Grid Snap" there used to be a Note Snap setting. I can't find that either in X1. This is crucial.
It's not what we're doing, it's how you do it :)

It just doesn't make sense to not have Note Snap, seriously. I don't want a 1/4 note each time I click!!! I have enjoyed and adjusted the to the changes thus far except for this. It really makes programming midi data un-enjoyable and harder for me. Btw, I don't want this to turn into another X1 bashing thread so please, don't get the wrong idea. If Cakewalk can elaborate on why this feature(s) was removed, I'd really like to hear it.

I don't find a pattern brush in midi but you may be able to accomplish the same through the step sequencer. There are (drum)patterns available there. 2. a. The last note selected function is no longer there. Many are hoping that will be returned in an update. b. the snap to grid is now universal and only on the control bar. You can drag the control bar down to just above your work space so that may help. c. note length is now selected from the smart tool bottom row right click.

lorneyb2 2. a. The last note selected function is no longer there. Many are hoping that will be returned in an update. Sorry - I know this is an old post, but it was the most accurate I could find. WOW - I recently took the plunge to Sonar X1, and thought I was going crazy - I have to add me to the list of requests for getting that feature back! (anyone have a link? ) I think it really ruins the MIDI editing - it adds at least 2 mouse clicks for each time the length needs to be changed and it forces you to loose focus on the PRV as it requires you to move the mouse to the note length in the smart tool menu.. and then again ... you're stuck with the preset note lengths! So having to place notes in overlapping legato (for lead basses etc.) you'd have to adjust ALL the notes after you've inserted them? Sigh... The future - I'll adjust because it's better? - I think not - this is truly a step back in midi editing IMHO! Sincerely, Dennis

If you use the smart tool and go towards the end of the note (or the front of the note) you can just drag it out to as long as you want it. You don't have to change tools. There are a number of sweet spots for each note that automatically gives the tool you need from Velocity to moving the note to changing length etc. Depending on how you have your snap to grid/magnetic strength settings you can also get them quantized at the same time. Go to the help menu and look at the shortcuts/ whats new and you will get a bunch of good tips. Scott Garrigus' book also may be very beneficial.

Hi lorneyb2, I know (and are still finding out) that the smart tool reacts differently to where you place the mouse on notes, clips etc. and dragging the end of notes (also all selected notes simultaneously) is also how I adjusted notes before in Sonar (pre X1)... I used to be a power user in Sonar pre X1, so I would think I will figure it out pretty easy What I really don't like is that it does not remember the latest note length - why? Because I often create a note in say 1/4th and drag it (or set it in the note properties dialog) a little longer (say 20 ticks) and the insert a series of notes that will be overlapping, so my synth (with the correct settings) plays with a mono legato effect. Then I insert a note and drag it (or set it in the note properties dialog) to say 1/16th + 20 ticks and then insert a series of these notes. Then I click at the end of one of the previous notes at 1/4th + 20 ticks) and then inserts another series of notes at the end - and yes that is a very easy way to interchange between 1/4ths + 20 ticks and 1/16ths + 20 ticks. Another annoying thing is that the snap settings are now global - I usually always snap to measures in the track view and I always snap to lesser in the PRV - with X1 I have to change it constantly! (I know and tried the Sonar Plus add-in - but it is no way near perfect and has its own limitations). Now that you mention snap to grid/magnetic strength settings - they do NOT obey the snap settings even at high strength. If I choose 1/16th triplets it is just as easy to insert notes at 1/16ths as it is at 1/16th triplets... and moving a note sometimes get skewed so that it insists of placing the note slightly off the grid... a workaround is usually to either drag it out of the bar, release the mouse button, then drag it back into the bar (at another grid point), and finally back to its intended position - or simply adjust in the note properties dialog. Quite annoying if you ask me! Sincerely Dennis
