Midi Recording: Real time with music playing

I'm trying to figure out how to record my midi instruments in real time. For example, when I hit record, I'd like to click on the piano roll with my cursor and have it show up recorded or represented in my midi track. I've seen it done on other software packages but can't figure it out with MC5.
