Midi Routing Question (Should Be Easy)
OK, I'm actually a C-walk veteran, but I took a year off, and now am having a head scratcher trying to figure out how to do something that I used to do all the time. Setup: Five hardware synths, with a Yamaha S90 as the main controller. Midiman 2x2 USB midi router for midi; all synths have audio routed to a Mackie Onyx 1620 mixer. I have a dedicated MIDI track in Sonar for each synth (five tracks). Each is on its own OUTput midi channel. I have the midi INput for each track all pointed to midiman input A, channel 1 (which is the S90 controller source), and am able to record (via playing notes on the S90) on each track, no problem, just by enabling Record for each track one at a time. Each Sonar track is OUTputted to the correct midiman output and channel for the appropriate destination synth, so I can play back the midi tracks and the appropriate synth plays back, no problem. (So if the S90 is piano, the D-50 is trumpet, the DMPro is drums, they all play back correctly, all is good.) HERE is the question. when I am recording / performing on a midi track, I only HEAR the S-90 controller's audio output, no matter which track I am on. Now, I know that I should be able to point Sonar to a track that's "midi-out'ed" to some other hardware synth, and (through my mixer) HEAR that other synth; I used to do this (for years). (I am aware that I need to have the controller's internal synth set to "local OFF".) Even in a simple setup (S90 as controller, DX7 as slave), if I have each synth audio going to a separate audio channel on the mixer, and in sonar, they are on two different tracks, with both having the same controller midi IN, and the midi OUT is set correctly for the two synth's appropriate channels, I used to be able to select the DX7 channel, play the controller synth and HEAR the DX7. Sonar would see the midi settings and route "thru" the CC note-on messages out the appropriate midi channel. However right now, it seems that Sonar is routing all data back to the controller channel, regardless of how I have the track properties configured. I'm SURE that I'm just missing some bone-head configuration somewhere. Hopefully my good karma (years of contributing to this board) will come back to me with some good guidance on what I might be missing, because I feel like a dope that I can't get past this seemingly basic DAW config problem, despite years of previous success. (Please don't try to tell me the difference between midi and audio; I'm not that green. : ) Respectully appreciative for any guidance, Ed
