Midi clips in audio tracks?

It appears that it is possible in Sonar to put midi clips into audio tracks. You can also view and edit them in PRV. In fact, the drop-down menu for selecting tracks in PRV includes audio tracks as well as midi tracks. I don't get why.

    Hi Kev-

Yes, I've seen those same two behaviors in SONAR for as long as I can remember. Having a MIDI clip in an Audio track doesn't do any harm, but of course it doesn't do any good either, since you won't be able to hear it! Every once in a while I'll release a button on the wrong track while dragging a clip, and it would be nice if SONAR threw up a gentle reminder that MIDI clips don't belong in Audio tracks.

I completely agree with the 2nd point you bring up, and in fact I posted an FR about this a long time ago, but it's probably time to do it again. There's no reason at all to include Audio tracks in the PRV Pick Tracks list.

    Thanks-

    -Susan

I supposed it would going a bit too far to call being able to drag midi clips into audio a bug, but it is a bit of an oversight, it should not let you do it.

The only real harm it does is confuse the hell out of newbies. You can see that by some of the questions that crop up here about rendering MIDI to Audio.

I consider this a valuable feature. I archive a lot of frozen takes during song development, and think it's great I can store the original midi recording, and the audio bounce-down, on a single track, locked in perfect time.  When I need to go back to change a voice or correct a note, I've got half as many tracks to search through.  Which also means I didn't have to label 'em in the first place.  You'd have to pry this feature from my cold...

"Some", but a relative few, in my experience here. It's usually something more fundamental than that.

    Hi Wayne-

That's an interesting spin on it -- I've never thought of that! You'd still have to know or record somehow what the intended MIDI output was, though, no? Which soft- or hard-synth, what bank and patch?

One mans bug is anothers feature! maybe that is the reason its like that?? I think your view is coloured by the fact you are using version 5. You can address this issue more elegantly in later versions by using track folders. I regularly have 1 VSTi with several different midi takes neatly held in a track folder. Also my systems means I very rarely have to freeze tracks, (hopefully never when i switch to 8.5 64 bit.)

Susan - you are correct newbie confusion is usually more fundamental but I think this add to it.

Maybe it does no harm, but sometimes it's annoying when working in PRV and you want to switch to a different midi track using the drop-down menu or view several tracks combined. In a large project, you need to scroll through a long list of tracks to find the ones you want. Audio tracks should be filtered out from the list.

I suppose audio tracks are a convenient place to dump unused midi clips for later use. But there are better alternatives available for this, e.g. you could create spare midi tracks and archive them.

Thanks Susan. I have now submitted a request.

Are feature requests ever acknowledged? I have never received any feedback from any previous submissions. Nor have any of them ever been implemented.
