Midi file auto attaches TTS??
I've been using Sonar since the Cakewalk days. In X3 I just opened a Midi file and found the TTS was automatically instantiated and the midi tracks assigned to it! How long has this been going on lol. Can we assign a different synth to auto attach? Sometimes the little things surprise you the most!

Added in X3 afaik - I think its great, especially when auditioning midi files. Saves bucketloads of hassle just to hear what the base midi file sounds like without needing to first load a whole set of vst's to hear it! EDIT: Sorry Scook - we posted at the same time

I think this is a fabulous feature. I have literally over 2000 midi files, from all kinds of musical genres, and this makes checking out their quality super simple, with reasonable starting sounds. For midi files I will end up doing something with, I then go about the business of swapping out the sounds for better ones, such as with Kontakt and Battery 3. COOL stuff with X3. Bob Bone

Scott wrote; "no, you can't choose which synth is used. Still, the TTS-1 does a pretty good job with General MIDI files." This is true for soft synths but not true if yo set a default MIDI out for a hardware synth.

Hmmm... I saw this thread and haven't seen this, then right clicked on a MIDI file and selected "Open With" to reassign its file association. Currently it is assigned to X1, so I browse to X3, click okay and Win7 keeps it on X1 (I guess because the actual program name is identical). Is there another method to change this file association to X3?

I never like to let facts interrupt a good assertion but the reality is that Sonar now has a workaround for a lacking feature that most GM compatible hardware synths have had by design for at least 10 years..... garrigus Yep, that's a good workaround if you still use hardware synths. Scott

This is a great little new feature! You will come to really appreciate it, if you come to use SONAR to listen to a lot of MP3 files. When listening to a lot of MIDI files, this new feature saves a user from having to go through the repeated steps to assign MIDI files to playback using the TTS-1, hence, saving one from the associated time it takes to do this, and the associated annoyance that results from having to do this over and over again! I was wishing for just such a feature. Thanks Cakewalk!

Try this: Rename the SONARPDR.exe for X1, Right click a MIDI file, select 'open with,' browse to the SONAR X3 SONARPDR.exe and select it. Now, double-click on a MIDI file, and see if it uses X3 to open it. If it does, rename the X1 SONARPDR.exe back to the original name. And hope X3 is still used to open MIDI files when you double-click on one to open it. :)

No joy... I manually edited the registry (didn't work), then renamed X1 (which removed it from the "open with" list immediately), but selecting X3 will not "take." Assuming this is an "run as admin" issue, I changed the X3 properties for ALL users to "run as admin" but trying to assign X3 in the "open with" still will not take. Edit: I even went the opposite route to remove "run as admin" from X3, but Windows still will not recognize X3 (or even X2) as the default file association with MIDI files. The "work around" is to open X3, un-assign any midi outputs and open the MIDI file from within X3. This works as expected and is sufficient for me... the rest is more of an educational exercise.

This feature ONLY works when no MIDI output device is enabled in Preferences > MIDI > Devices, right? You guys don't enable the output of your MIDI keyboard controller? I'm using A-800Pro and it's recommended to enable its output port so I can't benefit from this feature...

Correct, outputs must be disabled to see this feature in action. I have outputs enabled, which is why I never saw this occur. But if you want to use this feature (it is handy for opening old MIDI files), you can simply disable MIDI output first, then open the MIDI file.

Hah! Yes, this is a great new feature in SONAR X3. This is tied to the Cakewalk TTS-1 only. I'm no Product Manager, but from what I understood this feature was implemented so that when you double-click on .mid file from anywhere on your computer, SONAR will open up and allow you to hear your MIDI sequence without assigning anything. I've had some calls where first time users "cannot get any sound out of their MIDI" due to the disconnect about routing MIDI tracks to a synth and then to an audio track. This feature alleviates some of that frustration when opening the software and using it for the first time ever. -DG

I happen to really dig this new feature of X3 auto inserting the TTS for a general midi file …. Kenny

I swore I was going to blow this off but did it anyway... To re-assign X1 to X3 for midi files, I modified the following registry entries... the quickest way to do this is to type "regedit" above the Windows Start Button, then Edit->Find and type in "SONARPDR.exe" (Producer version) Hitting F3 will find the next instance, and keep looking to the right for entries that actually have keys. Only the first four with key entries need to be checked if you want to re-assign X3 as "default" These are: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->Applications->SONARPDR.exe->shell->open->command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->Applications->CakewalkBundleFile->shell->open->command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->Applications->CakewalkMIDIFile->shell->open->command HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->Applications->CakewalkTemplateFile->shell->open->command The two I boldfaced needed to be changed on my machine, double clicking on the key in the right pane will allow you to edit the path to the program. I simply changed the X1 to X3 for those two and exited the registry. The first boldfaced key assigns which version of "SONARPDR.exe" Windows "recognizes," which is why I could not get Windows to see X3... the pointer was to X1. The second boldfaced key points specifically to the application Windows will launch midi files with. Edit: to reiterate the point of the thread, launching a MIDI file will only insert TTS-1 if your have no MIDI outputs assigned for SONAR.

I've just created a new test project in another daw and recorded three MIDI tracks using SI-Drum, SI-Bass and SI-Electric Piano and exported the three MIDI clips as a single standard MIDI file. Then I closed the daw and double-clicked the exported MIDI file, which opened X3 and created 4 tracks, like this: Strangely, the SI instruments are automatically loaded (but the first track/clip failed to show "SI-Drum Kit"), and TTS-1 is also loaded, with a blank track. But what I really don't understand is, a default drum map is automatically assigned to the three SI tracks. When I exported an existing project in another daw as a standard MIDI file and ran the same test last night, it did the same thing. All tracks had the default drum map. Very strange. What am I missing? Edit: Sorry, I thought SI instruments were automatically loaded, but it was only TTS-1. It's just the MIDI data and track/clip names that were carried over from the standard MIDI file. But I have no idea why the drum map has to be assigned automatically...

Hmm....strange. I've just deleted the SI drum track in the other daw and exported only 2 MIDI clips (SI-Bass and SI-Electric Piano) this time. But when I open the exported file in X3, the two tracks are still loaded with the default drum map. I need to investigate more...
