Midi files Soundfonts Sampler Sets
Here a really basic question. If I have a midi file, what are my choices to hear it? I know about GM and soundfonts. Do sample sets also play midi files? Are there other options? If samples do work, how would I make that happen? I'm using X1 Studio. Thanks.

☄ Helpful
The Cakewalk TTS-1 soft synth is great for playing GM midi files.

Thanks, but I still need to know other options to hear sound from a midi file. Are Soundfonts the best option? For those who don't use SF anymore, but wish to play midi files (great for learning guitar parts!), what do you use? Thanks guys.

you can use the SFZ player from the cakewalk store, free. or via your soundcard if it's soundfont capable

Thanks Fog. Problem is, I can't get sfz to work for me. I do have a soundcard that has soundfont capability (X-Fi titanium), but can't get that to work either. I recently upgraded from HS 2004 to Sonar X1 Studio. With the HS 2004, I used LiveSynth to manage my SoundFonts (I've got some fairly nice ones), and it worked beautifully. I've tried sfz and sfz+ (both vst and dxi) but they don't work with sonar for some reason.

I'm not sure that any of us are understanding your question. I play MIDI files all the time using SFZ. There are a couple of other sample type soft-synths included with X1. You can send a MIDI file to any soft-synth or to an external synthesyzer. You can also use a MIDI file to drive some audio effects like V-Vocals. I would imagine that you could use them to side-chain other effects if that is what you are looking for. What format are your samples in? It may be that you are asking how to load a sample into a soft-synth? Glen

Sorry for being so vague. Lemme try again, maybe I'll get my question right! I don't compose or use loops in X1 Studio. I only use it in conjunction with my guitar, and occasional recording purposes. I download songs from the internet in midi format, then look for better patches to replace the generic Windows GM set that gives sound to the various instruments in the midi/song. Then I edit the song until I like it, and jam along with it on the guitar or use piano roll to learn guitar parts. In the past I've used soundfonts, but I can't get my old soundfonts to come up - or any others - using SFZ or SFZ+. So what are my other options to make the midi music files sound decent? Are there sample sets that provide this same basic function of making midi files sound less generic? Is there some sort of GM set equivalent in sample formats other than soundfonts? Because my use of X1 is so narrow, I haven't learned about using other types of samples or other ways to accomplish this. Any advice would be great, and thanks again for your patience everyone.

well depends on your budget.. simple as that.kontakt will convert sf2's.. but then so will the thing I posted.. BUT remember you have to adjust the patch / bank accordingly IF it's not mapped correctly OR remove the data that atempts to set the patch /bank

Unless you have some emotional attachment to your current sound fonts, there are some incredibly good sounds available off-the-shelf in the base cakewalk products. Even the lowly TTS-1 (included in X1) works extermely well for what you are trying to do, and the Studio Instruments and other soft-synths are even better. It sounds like you just need help linking a MIDI file to a soft-synth and sending the audio output from the synth to a bus or soundcard. Check out http://www.cakewalk.com/CakeTV/Music-Creator.aspx and select "Using Instruments in Music Creator 6." This is for MC6, but also applies to X1. Glen
