If you can see the meters responding when data is coming from the drum module then it appears you are on the right track. To be sure, make sure the MIDI out/thru jack is connected to Sonar's MIDI In jack. And if you have another midi cable plug that into your Sonar's MIDI out jack and into the TD12's MIDI In jack. (It might help others in the forum if you tells more about what equipment you have.) This will allow Sonar to send controller data to the TD12 and for it to respond.
Load up the SD3 kit as synth. It will create a midi track and an audio track. You need to make sure what midi channel you are transmitting from on the TD12 and make sure the SD# midi track in Sonar is "listening" on the same channel. If you can set it the TD12 to OMNI and set Sonar to OMNI that may make things easier for starters.
Set the midi track to record. Press record on sonar and hit play on the module. Your midi data will "play" into the track. Then you can go into "Event View" in Sonar and you can see the data. I find it useful for looking at controller data. You can also use the "Piano Roll View" to look at the data as well. You can pick the view that best suits your needs.
I hope that helps you out a bit. Also, there are a plethora of resources on working with MIDI. If you have the manual (it may be online) for the TD12, that will also be of use. I don't know that piece of equipment specifically, but MIDI tends to work very similarly across many systems.
