Midi mind blackout. (solved)
I have done midi in the distant past. Can I get a basic refresher on setup? EG Bass track. I have a small midi keyboard but prefer to just pop the notes into the piano roll view. Let's say SI Bass for the sound? 1. In the Browser, Insert synth? 2. ? what choices? 3. what now? make Instrument track? 4. Something about preferences? 5 Set the In & Out in the inspector? 6 Where the heck is the SI Bass UI? I thought it would be listed in the browser. Man, one has to use these things all the time or forget.

1 I use the Synth Rack in the Browser. 2 For bass I use Dim Pro or Kontakt or Moog Mod V or The SI Bass. 3 I do not use Simple Instrument tracks, ever. 4 I make sure that all synths outs is checked and do not create a MIDI track unless I am going to create my own MIDI bass. 5 Set the MIDI out for this new track if needed. Either play on my keyboard or use MIDI loops or whatever.

For #6, on insert, if you check "Synth Properties Page" in the "Open these windows:" in the top right, the UI will open on the insert. Alternatively, you can also double click the MIDI icon just to the right of the track number to open the UI. You can play some with the insert dialog to see how you like, and what it does. If you enable MIDI source and All Synth Audio Outputs (mono or stereo), you will see all out the outputs (more "logical" visually and controllable, if desired). The "Simple Instrument Track" is sort of an odd duck, in that it takes MIDI input and produces audio output in one track. This can save on space, but can also be confusing if used, plus it only gives you the first synth audio output (even if more are available).

Thanks Guys. It's coming back. 1.Insert synth, -check ((Midi and first audio) 2 track show up 2.Plus sign/ Insert Synth/ SI Bass, -check (UI plays sounds) 3. Inspector= In = SI Bass, Out to card. 4 Select track, open Piano Roll and insert notes... Hmm no sound?

I have not used the SI bass often, but have seen issues with the notes needed to be transposed by an octave (for example... if you drag a bass track from TTS-1 to the SI bass, those notes need to be brought up and octave to play correctly (and if off the SI bass' scale, they may not play at all)). Are you sure you opened the PRV in the MIDI track (not the instrument audio track)? Offhand, that is the only thing that comes to mind. The MIDI track has the 5-pin connector icon, the instrument audio looks like a piano with the 5-pin connector in the upper left. If you already entered notes in the wrong track, shift-drag them down and see if they play for you. (You can also run the mouse up and down the keys in the PRV to make sure you are in the MIDI track of the synth.)

A lot of this is personal preference, but from the Browser I would switch to the Instrument tab, find your VSTi of choice, and drag & drop it into the track view - that will automatically create the track(s) for you based on the options chosen in the pop-up dialog. And although they're not popular with some users, I would personally choose a SIT for a bass track.
