Midi notes wash out
HI everyone, I'm having an issue when playing back midi. I'm using the U-he Zebrallete softsynth to play my synth parts. All is fine during recording. Note I am not using the sustain peddle for this. What happens is when I play the track back on the chord parts it's all a blur, notes sustain into the others. What could be causing this?

I've seen this before, notably with the Pentagon Synth.
The remedy for me was to make sure you leave a tiny gap between one note finishing and the next one starting.
In practice, this gap is totally inaudible, but cured the hanging notes problem.
If this doesn't cure it, come back and we'll think of something else

It almost sounds like a sustain pedal 'polarity reversal' kind of thing, but since you are not using a sustain pedal that makes it confusing.
Do you HAVE a sustain pedal plugged in, but just are not stepping on it? If that is the case, it could be that the polarity of the sustain pedal makes it such that 'off' is interpreted as 'on'. This is often called a 'polarity' issue, and it happens because of differences in how one set of manufacturers decided what means 'off' for a sustain pedal, versus 'on', and another set of manufacturers implemented THEIR sustain pedals to be the exact OPPOSITE.
So, IF you have a pedal plugged in, but are not actually stepping on it, perhaps you could either try stepping on it during playback to see if that makes it sound correct (confirming a polarity issue), or you could try simply unplugging the sustain pedal and see if that fixes it.
If you DO have such a polarity issue with your sustain pedal, many keyboards and midi controllers have a function that tells it to flip how it sees sustain pedal off/on signals, and that should take care of it.

I remember having this same problem with some softsynths back when I was using Sonar 6. I used the same workaround as Jonesey. But it stopped happening once I upgraded to Sonar 7.

try setting the amp envelop with no release time, check the polyphony setting as well, it could be voices over lapping, getn that with kick drums at high tempos with 16th notes, voices over lapping, have to set them to monophonic

This is a good time to check the Event list and see what is actually there. You should only be seeing notes and nothing else. If there is any sustained info remove it and see what happens. If there are only notes there and nothing else you may have a different sort of problem.
The compromise of finishing notes just before another is a serious compromise IMO. With string parts if you extend notes or overlap them even slightly it sounds quite different to stopping notes short before the next one. (even the smallest gap!) You should be able to do it if you want to.

Yes Kev, I've not had this happen for a long time now, but it was highly annoying at the time!

MIDI events, including note off, can get dropped sometimes if the MIDI prepare buffer is too small. What happens if it is raised to 500 msec (in Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Playback and Recording)?

Thanks for all your help. What I did was zero the sustain in the event list at the specific section and then in piano roll stretched the notes to where I wanted them to end.
